Reflection Of Teaching: The Challenges Of Interviewing A Teacher

Decent Essays
At first, having the task to interview a teacher, I thought that it was an unnecessary and an inconvenient project. It is amazing how my opinions changed over the course of time with this project. This assignment was very helpful for helping me decide whether or not I want to teach, which is a relief to me. As I was talking to my step-grandmother, Kathy Mersch, she expressed her love and passion for what she used to do in the classroom; she was an elementary teacher. All of my current questions about teaching were finally answered by someone who has had plethora experience and I’m so happy that she shared her knowledge with me over the challenges, experiences, and beliefs with the education programs.

Mersch, I was shocked by some of her answers. One in particular was her answer to how many schools she taught. I always thought that most teachers stayed in one or two schools their whole career, so when Mrs. Mersch listed off five schools I was taken aback. It was good to hear that once you got a job as a teacher that you aren’t concrete in that specific school, I personally thought that the more teachers moved from school to school, the less likely it is to get a job even though I don’t have a valid reason for that assumption. Considering Mrs. Mersch has been teaching for thirty-six years, I think that she is a reliable source when interviewing her. She was full of wisdom and advice and I am overall happy that I interviewed her because I learned things I never knew not only about the teaching career, but her as a …show more content…
Mersch is that, at least in the community that she was involved in for twenty plus years, the parents were very involved. My mother was involved with my school to a certain extent, more with homework or just parent-teacher conferences, but Mrs. Mersch was spoke about how the teachers in this community were willing to help teach their child their sight words or addition and subtraction at home. She also stated that the parents wanted to come into the classroom and help, this makes me awfully excited to teach my future students because it shows, at least in the community that she taught and I’m from, that parents do care about their child’s education and that they want to see the child succeed. At the same time, this can frighten me as well though. I only say this because I have heard of some classmates who always had their parents complain about the teacher or attacked the teacher verbally through email, or whatever the case may be because they do care about their child getting good grades, and when they don’t get good grades they blame the teacher. I wish I would have asked more questions about this topic, but I will ask her the next time I get the

Each person has his or her individual path to follow, no two paths are exactly the same; but, every now and then, paths interweave and people construct bonds with each other. In the case of Sonny and his brother, the narrator, in James Baldwin’s short story, “Sonny’s Blues”, their paths were parallel with one another until they grew up. Sonny left the slums of Harlem, aspiring to become a musician, while his brother settled in Harlem and became a teacher. Although the narrator and his brother ended up with completely different lives, the narrator being a family man with a teaching job and Sonny, an ex-convict playing jazz at a club, are ironically more similar than they are portrayed.…

As we’ve studied the different types of educational philosophies in class, I’ve been able to see which category my beliefs fall into and where that puts me in the teaching world. Throughout my educational career, my family and teachers have shaped my philosophy into a combination of both romanticism and progressivism. As a teacher I want to be able to help a student strive for self-fulfillment while focusing on individual student’s learning processes. Based on my ideals, I want for my classroom to be a place where my students can go to learn in a way that suits their personality, and in a non-pressured environment. I want to be able to engage my students and challenge them to learn based on their interests.…
