Essay On Toast

On December 5, 2014, I gave a speech (toast) to my dear fellow classmates, Ms. Rich, and Mr. Jenson, on Mother Teresa. As said, I received the video of me giving the speech and from the beginning, I was excited to receive it. I wanted to know how I did and I really wanted to see if I have improved or not. I wasn’t dreading it when I was watching myself on video because I personally now feel that I became a better public speaker than what I was before. In fact I was excited to get my video after I presented because watching myself on video giving a speech does improve my speaking skills and I was able to critique myself while watching. In addition, watching this video made me more self- conscious and I was able see if I made mistakes or not in front of the audiences. After finishing the whole video, I felt good …show more content…
My strongest performance throughout this whole year was probably my last one and the weakest was my demo speech. I would say my strongest was the toast speech because I remembered what I should be working on when I was giving my speech so I felt like I did a lot better than all the others. My weakest would be the demo speech because I went over time and although it was clearly delivered step by step, it was too slow and I wasn’t able to finish making a final product. But I would say the reason I did really well on this speech was because I was more prepared. I practiced a lot and I rehearsed a lot more than I usually do because this was the last speech we were going to be videotaped on. Most definitely, better organization, more facts and more quotes did help improve my speech because it made everything much easier for me and it was much easier to deliver the content more confidently when I knew what I was talking about. My performance was better than it was at the rehearsals because since I practiced it so many times, I was able to make eye contact and deliver it effectively. I did feel

My goal was to get up to the podium, give my speech, and use the inflections and tones I intended for the speech. I would say I was pretty successful in doing so. In a few spots I lacked the tone I wanted, but for the most part, and the important parts, like the sarcastic bits, I did use inflection that was necessary. My pacing was a little off at points, but I expected that to happen sooner or later since I was nervous. I also wanted to incorporate rhetoric, without making it an extremely emotional, more a fact based speech, which I feel accomplished.…

After watching my speech on video I recognized several things that beforehand I believed I had done well, and upon watching the speech, did do very well. Firstly was my organization, but mainly my introduction and main points. Both of these had all aspects covered and were easy to notice during the speech. Secondly I thought I did very well with my volume, rate, and vocal variety. These verbal delivery attributes came off very well in my speech and I was very happy to see that I could still execute these aspects.…

However, in this speech I did a much better job talking with my hands than in any other of my speeches. WEAKNESSES Just like how I had plenty of strengths, there are definitely still things I need to work on. My speech would have gone so much better if I was better organized and practiced more. I kind of just threw some important information together without thinking about everything that should be included in the speech. The information I included was really good, however I just needed to add more and organize it better.…

To be honest I was never a good public speaker there are times I avoid public speaking there are certain fears I had such as tongue tied, forgetting my lines, the awkward silence when I try to make a joke or point and by being myself blurting out words like "stuff" or "shit" unconsciously. I know it's so unprofessional but it happened quite a few times. After speaking in public I kinda dwell on what I said something that bothered me or that was unsaid.…

The results of my PRCA-24 were a little surprising but in a good way. I got an 84 which was much higher than I thought it was going to be which I guess reflects on the fact that maybe I don 't give myself as much credit as I should when thinking about my public speaking ability. One of the things the test made me realize is that i’m more nervous in regular life than I am nervous when public speaking, because I thought about the questions if they referred to the circumstances of everyday life. I guess that’s the benefit and downside to being a performer. Watching the video was a little bit strange for me because I’m always perceiving myself differently when I’m up there, which is partly a perspective switch but also sometimes it’s also focusing…

I’m sitting down in my English classroom, waiting for my teacher to call me up. When I hear my name being called; a rush of panic runs through my whole body, my heart starts to race, my hands start getting sweaty, and when I opened my mouth not a single word comes out. Public speaking was a challenge because I always feared people would judge me over what I had to say and it became one of my insecurities. During my junior year in high school, I decided to take speech and debate so that I could gain the confidence to speak in front of an audience. I had participate in Redlands East High School Speech Competition where I talked about how we should not judge anyone under any circumstances, using homelessness as an example.…

After noticing the speaker’s confidence during the speech, it became clear that his calmness and ability to speak clearly, his ability to refer to his notes and to use the power point at the same time and also his ability to ensure he was the source of the information he was giving made his delivery good. This informative speech could have been improved with more body movement during the transitions and a good eye contact with the…

Final Persuasive Speech Reflection Believe me when I say that my progress from then to now has come a long way. Initially after giving the persuasive speech, I felt that there has been little process in all of this time that I had spent trying to learn to communicate more effectively. Worst of all perhaps, I felt powerless to do anything to change this. This was my most practiced speech and it did not feel that way. Even the thought of having to go back and essentially relive those 7 minutes was not something I was particularly excited about.…

In this class I learned about how to be a better team member. This semester I was reminded of how important communication is and how people need to keep emphasizing it as one of the most important skills any person could possesses. The personality test was useful, I think it gave all of us a good way to start to see how everyone is different.
