Journal three focuses on my recollection from past hours I volunteered at Debbie’s Angels Productions. After my last journal on “the Little Shop of Horrors,” I discontinued going since I reached my goal of twenty-five hours and had a busy end of the semester schedule. Throughout the whole service learning, I had minimal interaction with the children from the “Aladdin” play; however, some important details came to mind. My service learning at Debbie’s Angels Production connects to the operant conditioning theory, reflects on my personal and educational learning process, and describes on how my knowledge on resilience impacts my service learning.

One of the most exciting things that have happened in this new semester of school is having the opportunity of attending a service learning class. Personally, I believe that it is important to engage not only in educational programs, but also in service learning courses that will help us grow as service agents and leaders in our communities. Having the opportunity of working hand in hand with the House of Loreto is not only an enrichment opportunity, but also since I am studying Occupational Therapy it helps me to have a deeper understanding of the elderly population which I plan on working with in the future. Working closely with the resident Eileen Miller helped me to have a deeper understanding of the course readings and how the elders…

For my service-learning project I volunteered at Holston Health and Rehabilitation Center. Holston is a place for senior citizens to come when they are either too old to care for themselves at home or are recovering from surgery. I do many things when I volunteer there. I can help with anything from decorating, printing, organizing, or cleaning.…

The first time I performed on stage, I was the opening act for Elvis Presley. I was five years old and my family was staying at an inn for the weekend. In the building’s lounge, there was a small stage on which musicians and comedians would perform at night. On that particular night, an Elvis impersonator was scheduled to sing, but he was running late. Naturally, I ran up to the stage, dragging along my brother and cousin to be my backup dancers.…

I had been doing shows with an organization called Tapestry theater, which allows special needs youth to star in musicals with the support of an understudy/mentor, and although I loved doing Tapestry, I had not yet found the mentee that would revive my hope. I had noticed Cameron, a small, rambunctious, middle school boy with epilepsy and autism, during the winter show, and felt such a strong connection to him regardless of our few interactions. Cameron was widely known as the most difficult mentee to have, and every one of his previous mentors had become so frustrated that they begged to be paired with someone different the next show. Cameron was constantly getting yelled at, by a mentor, mentee, or director, regardless of what he did. He continually was getting shot down, which prompted him to ask “Is this okay?”…

I choose to speak to Mrs. Williams for my first service learning paper. She is retired, married, and a mother of two children. At age 11 she started work on a plantation to help earn money for her family, after her father’s sudden death. Working at such a young age prevented her from receiving an education. She feels ashamed for not being able to read or write, which kept her from building friendships because she did not want anyone to know of lack of education.…

For my service learning project, I volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of Gregg County, which is one of the centers that had merged with the Boys and Girls Club of Big Pines in Marshall (Cromer, 2016). The mission statement of the Boys and Girls Club of Big Pines is “To empower the kids of East Texas to be great” (About the Club, 2016). In addition to this statement, the organization as a whole seeks “To inspire and equip all young people, especially those that need us most, to achieve their full potential as healthy, productive, responsible caring citizens” (About the Club, 2016). The statement is apparent when I was volunteering. The students of various ages were given the opportunity to enhance their skills.…

In the twenty-second century as set in Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card, children are recruited for Battle School. They suffer through unimaginable trials for children of their age and still survive. This unlikely feat is explained by Diane Coutu in her article “How Resilience Works,” a study of resilience in modern people and businesses, in which she discusses the three key characteristics of resilience that help people through hardship. In Ender’s Game, Orson Scott Card displays children’s innate, remarkable ability to recover from trauma and endure hardships. In both texts, resilience is presented as a multifaceted quality that allows people to survive suffering and trauma unbroken.…

After observing the amount of litter, trash, and dead trees across my local park during my service-learning project, my insight about pollution and the cutting down of trees increased and lead me to have more empathy about the issue I was researching. For my service-learning project I participated in “Clark Park Cleanup”, the purpose of which was to assist in cleaning up Clark Park, planting trees, and promoting the importance of trees and clean parks for our environment. While completing this project I learned many things, some of which being the importance trees have on our environment, and how having clean parks are beneficial for our nation. It helped me understand the issue I was researching more deeply and helped me connect with the issue. Three words that best describe my service-learning experience would be enlightening, appreciative, inspirational.…
