My Ideas In Literature

How do people learn to read? When dissecting this idea, reading becomes comparable to a flower as it holds beauty, life, and growth, but it also shows when people forget to water. Although the flower will wilt and possibly die from lack of nurturing, there always remains hope of revival because flowers can regrow. Ultimately this reflects my major thoughts about literature, and how my journey consists of fallouts, but like a flower this concept of ‘death’ holds no barriers. The emphasis of starting anew builds upon why reading is important to me as I am rooted in the pages and always trying to expand myself. In regards to my literary choices of the past, I will demonstrate how they have shaped my personality by the childhood connections I made, …show more content…
Seuss. Here I learned not to judge a book by it’s cover, I apply this to my life today. While, this was my first, distinct memory my actual favorite books include, The Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, and The Magic Treehouse by Mary Pope Osborne. These titles have proven themselves as a place for trials, and sporadic behavior, as everything is not promised from the new settings in every novel. My ideas of going on adventures came from the imagination that developed from The Magic Tree House, the siblings always managed to have fun. This notion of never being in the same place appealed to me because nothing ever seemed repetitive. These characteristics even took root in my own personality as of today people would describe me as spontaneous and always up for an adventure. While I am always ready for a new experience, I have balanced my sporadic behavior with motherly characteristics. These characteristics were a result of Violet, who was an influential character, from The Series of Unfortunate Events. She ensured that her younger brother and sister were always taken care of, despite her life as an orphan and constant change of setting. A change in setting never affected the overall affection that she demonstrated, and I carry this concept of caring for others in this same …show more content…
The means of imaging a whole, new world makes me look forward to opening a book, similar to Narnia’s setting of the wardrobe as these books serve as a gateway to a new dimension. In all honesty, this alternative world is a sanctuary for myself and a reason that I read now. Although I typically read for school necessity over pleasure, my spare moments allow me to indulge. These moments either are a result of walking into a library with no direction, or hearing a personal review from a reader. Recently, I walked into a library and found The Zahir by Paulo Coelho, which is based upon the reader’s life, and journey through it, and I was glued. He spoke of this obsession people can gain in life called the Zahir, in his case his wife, until he freed himself. His freedom came from a face-to-face confrontation with his wife and his self-discovery before physically reaching her. This ability of authors to share stories that are a result of imagination, reality, or both are the reasons I

Overall my experience with reading has been forced, and limited and has lost its original glamour. For me what reading novels brings to other people, I can obtain through other means that are more appealing for my way of thinking. While I don’t enjoy the act of reading a 600 page mandatory novel, I do enjoy the conversations that it can cause. Such as the debating, and sometimes the arguments, that come from the material within the carefully thought out cover pages can be intriguing and rewarding. However, to say that books have influenced my thoughts about the world, or have made…

Reading was something I was practically raised on as a child. My dad made sure that my younger sister and I were read to every single night before he tucked us in, passing down a tradition that he believed had aided in shaping his own childhood. I distinctly remember my simple mind roaming along in the lands of Narnia and Middle Earth as such books instilled in me a restless sense of adventure and a longing to learn. This longing drove me to read more and more on my own, all the while my father continued to read to me at a higher and more complex level, that at the time seemed unattainable. Yet books to me were journies completely separate from my own world and I could never seem to envision them as anything more than a source of entertainment.…

As a beginning reader young adult books captivated me with what, at the time, were intriguing and comprehensible plot lines. Thus began my love affair with books. Eventually, those plot lines became my adversary, when their simplicity triggered a soporific rendition of the book. It persisted until the gifts of classical literature unwrapped as I learned to penetrate, explore, and discover meanings in, for example, Dickens’ lengthy description of a clock tower did I truly find my beloved. Although young adult books had their place in my life by inspiring a love for reading, classical literature has opened up a whole new perspective, teaching me to seek out knowledge while still yielding enjoyment as I consume each book.…

It was when I wasn 't expecting to learn that I learned the most. It began in late middle school when we were preparing for high school English. Usually, when I read or write outside of school, it comes naturally to me; there is no over thinking involved. However, at school, I could not write a single sentence without double checking it to make sure the flow is right. I suppose it was the pressure of knowing my writing would be graded that made me ensure it was “perfect”.…

I am writing this final Letter of Reflection to discuss my background in reading and writing about literature, my strengths and weaknesses in writing, changes I have noticed in my writing style, process, and abilities this semester, and why I have chosen to revise my Initiation Story, poem research paper, and essay on Death of a Salesman for my final portfolio. While in high school, I took College Prep English courses as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. In those classes, I was required to read various forms of literature such as poems, plays, short stories, and novels. Some of my favorites were Lord of the Flies, Romeo and Juliet, and The Pearl. I also wrote numerous essays analyzing different components of the literary works.…

Answering ‘why study literature’ is not tied to a singular conclusive response, rather it is justified through a multifaceted contention based upon a myriad of interlinking reasons. Literature is inherently complex and not so simply tied to a singular purpose for its existence despite various critics contending otherwise. Harold Bloom, in his How to Read and Why, quintessentially exalts the notion that literature has one singular purpose and staunchly discredits any literature that does not conform to his contention. Bloom’s answer to the question ‘why study literature’ is quite narrow in that he declares literature must abide a certain didactical purpose, else it is worthless. Praising select authors, and condemning a majority of others, Bloom…

Just like learning to walk or ride a bike, learning to read is one of life’s milestones. However, unlike walking and biking, reading skills are not suddenly obtained and then static throughout life. After learning to read initially, an individual’s reading skills, interests, and purposes further develop and change throughout their life. Furthermore, the means by which an individual improves their reading capabilities change over time as well. In the same way, I initially improved my reading ability and changed my interests through the help of my parents, then later my teachers, and finally, in spite of a dark period of little improvement, through my own effort.…
