The Pumpkin Chunkin Project

Improved Essays
At New Tech High @ Coppell (NTH@C) one of the most intimidating projects for most students is the physics class’s “Pumpkin’ Chunkin’” project. This is because of the limited time that they have to build a completely functional catapult and it tests the ability of people to collaborate for long periods of time. I was also afraid of starting this project because I had not idea how to do everything for this project. I could design and do the math, but I not real experience with power tools or working with large piece of wood. Before the project officially started I talked with a group of friends who shared a similar work ethic to try to form a group for the project. We talked with my physics teacher about the group choice and he approved it. …show more content…
The catapult was already at the launching site behind NTH@C and was ready for the event. My group’s catapult was launching around halfway into the competition so I spent some time talking with other groups and making sure the catapult was ready. My physics teacher called for my group to ready our catapult. We all felt tension as we readied the catapult and even the catapult itself was under tense pressure due how tight we made the rope after twisting it around the arm. The pumpkin was loaded into the catapult and we counted down. As the catapult’s arm released the pumpkin it felt as if time slowed down as the pumpkin soared through the air before making contact with ground. When we went to measure the distance we discovered that we had achieved the largest distance and nearly doubling the team previously in first. What surprised me even more was that the pumpkin was completely was undamaged, only the paint and we covered the it in had been removed from its outside. We returned to our catapult victorious at a successful job making our catapult. As the event continued on I watched the remaining teams and we remained in first place for the rest of the competition until the final launch of the day. The final team built a floating arm trebuchet and spent around sixty hours building it. There total distance bested my groups and they won it total distance. I was not disappointed or frustrated that I did not win. I was glad that the project was over and that my group’s catapult was one of the most advanced competitor in the

I knew that I couldn’t look around or I would slow down, so I looked straight forward. I didn’t look back and when I hear my dad shouting my name, I pushed myself even further. And I won. I won. Walking on to the Lucas Oil turf as a Carmel Marching Greyhound for awards at Grand National finals after an exhilarating performance of “What a Tangled Web We Weave” was a feeling of pure accomplishment. As a sophomore, I had done this once before, but this time was different. The whole band knew we were in the running for the national title. Avon and Broken Arrow were our biggest competitors. Earlier in the season we won ISSMA state, so coming into nationals we knew we had a pretty good chance of being exceptionally good.…

Today 's current society is filled with individuals that exploit the environment. This focus on industrial actions creates a society that is separates nature from humans. With this separation, it is always incredibly satisfying to be involved with groups that are so dedicated to conserving lands for species to use. The project that I was so fortunate to work with was the MPG Ranch. This project allowed me to experience the actions of conservationists from a firsthand perspective in order to see for myself the value of humans with the environment.…

During my sophomore year of high school, in my AP Psychology class, we were assigned an in-depth group research project that would take the whole year to complete. They were to be over either a psychological theory or a social experiment related to psychology. The whole project would entail predictions, pre-research, experiments, and a final APA style psychology research report. When I do projects I prefer to do something no one else has done yet so then it’s something new for the teacher, my classmates, and me.…

Have you ever been pushed to the point where you felt like you couldn’t go any further, like your body and mind would fall apart if pushed harder? In gymnastics, you are pushed to your mental and physical breaking point. When it comes time to compete, you have to make sure you know your routine and how to make it win the perfect 10. I, as a newly-budding 5th grader, knew this decently well, and my first gymnastics meet was definitely one for the memories. Flipped Out Gymnastics, located in Howell, was where I trained and competed as a level 5 gymnast.…

I joined my school’s wrestling team during my junior year of high school and went into this new environment with 0 years of prior training and 16 years of “Girls don’t really wrestle”. I was determined to excel during my first wrestling experience to challenge the skepticism that surrounded girl wrestlers. Despite this resolve, I was terrified at the thought of having to actually wrestle someone, so when I found out that my first wrestling match would be against a small, unassuming girl 20 pounds lighter than me, I was relieved. With newfound hope, I went into my match thinking, “How could I possibly lose to someone half my size?”…

At Sabin-Schellenberg, there is a welding program that can help high school students get their welding certifications before college. It also helps students learn about different welding process and how to fabricate multiple things out of metal. I am one of those students working towards a certification, but it's not as easy as it seems. One of my hardest accomplishments this year was restoring a stool for a customer while practicing on my 3G certification all in one weekend When I first got the stool project I was surprised that my teacher gave it to me because it was a challenging project that required a lot of skills to complete. The first thing I did was take a picture of the stool and started to work on it.…

As athletes, I think we all HATE going to practices. They’re exhausting, boring, and we almost feel like we don’t really need to be there; but trust me, we do. I have been cheering since I was 5 years old and now that I have seen where it has got me today, I will never take another practice, competition, or game for granite. We have to work for everything in our lifetime and if we think it’s just going to be handed to us, we’re wrong. Every second we are able to be on that blue mat is worth it.…

Overall, I was extremely happy with the effort my group put into this project. In terms of attending the group meetings, everyone was present and participated in the discussion. The first meeting took place on a Sunday afternoon at Baruch and the second meeting took place on a weeknight in the form of a Google Hangout. The times and places of these meetings alone displayed every group members’ commitment to the project, effort to accommodate for scheduling conflicts, and effort to ensure they are contributing their fair share to the group regardless the time or day of the week. At these meetings, we discussed ways to engage the crowd and critiqued each other’s slides and presentations.…
