My Writing Course Analysis

Improved Essays
Throughout this course there has been many obstacles that got in the way of my writing. When I first came into this course I was average at writing papers, although I did find that I had a difficult time incorporating the text or planning my ideas out in such a way that was organized and put together. As I went and did revisions on my first two essays I noticed that I was missing words between punctuation and had run-on sentences. These were simple mistakes, the mistakes that were harder for me to fix were the ones that incorporated the text and the meaning. Understanding these complex essays in The Ways of Reading, was the hard part for me to be able to create a well organized essay on my thoughts. Over the next three essays I wrote I was …show more content…
Annotating the text allowed or me to write my ideas without having to re-read the whole essay, the little annotations guided me with the big ideas of the text. It elaborated the text for me sentence by sentence if I didn’t quite understand it. One thing that surprised me in my work as I read through it one last time would be how in detail and passionate I get into the text when it’s a topic that I truly understand and side with. For example, Pratt’s essay, as I wrote more and more on my two hometown communities I was able to go into great detail because it was a large topic that I was involved in while in high school. This goes along with how interesting it was for me to go back and see the emotions I tried to incorporate into the text as I wrote about family and my community within Pratt’s essay and Rodriguez’s essay, “growing up watching my mother struggle day by day,” was easily one of the hardest things to do as a child. Although I may not be the best at essay writing, titles, or quoting, when you put me into a text that I can understand and relate to I can get myself to sit down and truly relate it back to my own learning and life. This is something I learned to adapt to this year while learning to read these far more complex …show more content…
Editing and proofreading it something I find a lot easier to do when I have someone next to me guiding me on what is proper and what is not, which is why the learning commons was a good place for me throughout this course. By seeking help from another person besides me, helps me read out loud and find the silly mistakes I seem to make when I proofread too fast. Proofreading has been helpful to me when I read each sentence about two to three times out loud just to make sure it all goes smoothly. If I read if once and moved on, I found that I would miss errors. Titles have never been the best part of my essay, although I found that creating the title and thesis after I write my paper is the best way to make sure you incorporated everything into the title and the thesis. If you set your title of thesis first, then it may alter and limit your essay abilities by not being able to expand your ideas in the way you might want to. For example, in essay three I didn’t put a title until I did revisions, but for Pratt’s essay (essay two) I was able to create a title that fit right into the subject I was covering, “Two Communities Adapting as One.” This may not be the strongest title but as the course went on, so did my writing abilities and the way I learned to expand my ideas. I hope to be able to expand my ideas even more next semester as I continue on in

To the Members of the Portfolio Committee, When I came to Spelman, I was an English major who lacked confidence in my writing and my intelligence at times. I knew the basics of writing, but not the dynamics. I could write a wonderful essay, but it would lack emotion and true depth. Spelman helped to change my confidence and made me the writer I am today. Reflecting back on my senior year, I was hesitant to become an English major.…

Upon reading chapter 5 from Holdstein’s “Who says? The Writer’s Research” I found myself faced with a number of ideas I had been unfamiliar with. After thoroughly examining this chapter, I realized that previously, I hadn’t properly evaluated resources, which is a mistake I made as someone who gathers research and analyzes various ideas in my writing. Throughout this chapter, I took notice that I, as a writer, have three main responsibilities: conducting a thorough search for sources using the proper key words, carefully and meticulously, yet efficiently analyzing sources, and determining the rationality of a source. While these ideas may present themselves as challenging, as I had been previously unfamiliar with them, if I acquire the proper…

My writing process coming into junior year was quite flawed and would go moderately like this: I would try and start with some hook that at least sounded like it related to the topic I was assigned. I then added a thesis that did not sound like total trash that included exactly what I planned to discuss. As I wrote the rest of my essays, I would sometimes realize there was something I felt added to the argument’s appeal, and after adding it to the body paragraphs, I summed it up in a couple words and squeezed it into my thesis. That was about the maximum amount of revising I would do for my essays. My decently crafted essays contained simple diction with a few SAT words I remembered while writing thrown in awkwardly.…

The most crucial step of my writing processes is letting my mind go wild and my fingers move freely. Whenever I write anything, I always let myself write whatever is on my mind at that exact second. Even if it doesn’t make 100% sense or isn’t exactly on topic, I’ll type it out. When I was writing my essay, I didn’t stop to fix anything until the very end. When I finished writing, I looked for mistakes.…

In article “So you’ve got a Writing Assignment” Corrine Hinton said “When getting a writing assignment, you should read it more than once just to get knowledge of what they are really asking for”. Hinton claims that it is really important that people carefully read their assignment again and again to understand it properly because when people don’t know the purpose of writing assignment exactly then it is really hard to write well. Again I argue that reading is the back bone of writing. I was not a good reader so I was doing mistake that i did not read my writing assignment properly and at the end I failed and it irritates me because I worked hard…

It feels like so long ago when I first began this English course. I can remember being so excited about the class topic, racism and social justice, which I felt that I had a lot of passion for. Little did I know that I would have to gather up even more enthusiasm and passion to be able to continue writing papers about the same topic all semester long. This course has tested my endurance, and at many times my patience, and for that I am thankful because I know in the end, it has made me a better writer. Despite various minor challenges this semester I believe that I have put in the hard work that it takes and I have achieved the course goals and will complete this class feeling fulfilled and accomplished.…
