It is very similar to writing in a journal. Students are able to talk about experiences that are important to them, that they have struggled with, or that they have overcome. I think it is very important to show students our own personal narratives because to shows them that the teacher is human too, all while giving a personal example of what theirs should model. After sharing this with students, I would include the Sharing Folder activity. Many students love being creative and going outside the boundaries of typical pre-writing. With a Sharing Folder or something similar, students can refer back to those vital moments that they might want to write about. I also would include the sensory detail activity. While students may not struggle with talking about an experience, they could struggle with how they develop that into writing. Having students go back to that time and focus on what they saw, heard, felt, smelled, or tasted, they are able to produce more detailed imagery. It brings their writing alive.
While the personal narrative experience was not foreign to me, the different activities and approaches to it were. I was able to take that same story that I have written about for years and develop it into an emotional and detailed story. I credit that new-found emotion with the sensory detail activity. As I keep re-reading my narrative and critiquing it, I cant help but reliving the experience. Out of all the times
