My nursing definition doesn’t change much from my initial impressions. To me, a nurse is someone that takes care of patients who are sick or in needs. They perform certain treatments on the patients and help them with basic daily tasks. Their job needs to be done with professionalism and great love and care. No matter how hard and unsanitary the task might be, nurses still need to handle the job with all respect to the patient. However throughout the class I understand more about the hardship that nurses have to face with on a daily basis. It is not always easy to keep an unbiased love and care toward patients when they don’t treat nurses well, as they are under so much physical and emotional pain.
Originally, nurses were mostly recognized in wars, since the number of injured soldiers and casualty were the highest and nurses were most needed. They took care of soldiers and healed them. They also assisted doctors as the number of doctors were limited. Same as modern nursing, nurses play a crucial role in assisting doctors. Although I had known that nursing is absolutely a busy and hard career, there were certain things that I didn’t expect until I took the class and got to know more about the profession. Before the class, I didn’t think much about the stress that they have to deal with from seeing patients suffering pain every day. It is absolutely a hard thing for me to witness and I need to prepare my mentality for that if I work as a nurse in the future. I also learned about different specialties that the occupation provides and various work places, environment settings that nurses work at. Last but not least, I was confirmed about the competitiveness of nursing program at BYU so that I can aim higher and work harder to keep my GPA
