Reflective Essay: Luke Timothy Johnson's Perspective On Jesus

Introduction I arranged my portfolio essays in order of worst to best, or phrased in an another way, least developed or important to the most important. It was very difficult to decide where each piece should be placed. However, I felt that by using this rationale, I could better express what I feel I have learned this semester and how I have grown as a student and spiritual person. The first piece I included is my first reflection paper. It is understandable that this piece might be seen as in need of the most improvement. While it is not the worst in a sense of technicality or grammar, I feel that it suffers from a lack of opinion. I think this piece is my worst because it has no strong message or new information. It may be correct academically, but it is almost a waste of a paper since it doesn’t add any substantial knowledge to myself as a student. This perspective might be a little harsh on myself, however I think it dramatically illustrates my later improvement when compared to my last few essays. The second paper I included was my third reflection which discusses Luke Timothy Johnson’s perspective on Jesus. In this paper I explore the idea of a …show more content…
I am finding this mercy in theology and literature centered on feminism and liberation. In my mind to be a follower of Jesus is to be called to an extreme life of struggling to become like Christ in the world. As we learned in class, subversive wisdom goes against the norm and can at times breed hatred from those attached to conventional wisdom. To paraphrase Jon Sobrino, people don’t mind if you tend to those they’ve wounded, however when you begin to change the rules in order to prevent wounds there is often a strong backlash. While it might seem like Christian values are commonplace, especially in the Western world, in reality if one truly lives out the principle of mercy there is

These two negative claims are pivotal to this idea of a pre-Easter Jesus. Borg then discusses the positive strokes of the pre-Easter Jesus. These strokes are that Jesus was a deeply spiritual man, a teacher of wisdom, a social prophet, and a movement founder. The culmination of these six claims make up the sketch of the historical Jesus. This historical assertion allows scholars to try and understand the man Jesus, not the divine savor.…

Three important themes to consider when reading the Hebrew Bible are God’s relationship with humanity, humanity’s attempt to be like God, and humanity’s disobedience of God. These themes are important in any religious text because they are crucial to understanding the human condition and the purpose of human existence. Genesis reveals how God’s relationship changes because of disobedience, as well as how a desire to be equal to God motivates disobedience. This is important in how it explains the ultimate reason humans sin and how it affects God’s relationship with humanity.…

I when I was writing it, I kept getting frustrated because I didn’t feel like it was my best work. I did a lot of research on it and with the help of the writing center and my Professor, Dr. Osterhaus, I came to the conclusion that a rhetorical analysis was not as foreign as I though it was. The best improvement I made on my paper was based on the feedback I received at the writing center.…

However, with the guidance and instruction given to me by the professor and peers I was able to strengthen my work as a student.…

Being generous, going when God says “go”, communication with God and servant leadership, are all characteristics Johnson includes in the embodiment of a prophet. Although this “perfection” seems hard to reach, it is something the contemporary church should strive for, to be more Christ-like. Johnson analyzes the way prophetic vision is expressed through ministry of Jesus in correlation to the early church. He points out that the prophetic mission of Christ is contrary to those of other pagan nations, but also to Judaism (the Pharisees) and the Essene community who had even more religious rules.…

In today’s world, religion is often a subject where one is encouraged to tread lightly, where constructive criticism has seemingly lost its place to passionate claims of heresy. Thus, it is only fitting that a book co-written by a self-proclaimed modernist, in Marcus Borg, and an undeniable traditionalist, in N.T. Wright, takes the form that we see in The Meaning of Jesus Christ: Two Visions. Each section of the book is broken down into two separate chapters; one written through the viewpoint of Marcus Borg and one as seen by N.T. Wright. What results is a seemingly flawless representation of what the discussions about Christianity should look like when taken from the various independent sects of the larger religion. This book showed its readers…

Freshman Composition has resulted in many sleepless nights and has been by far the most difficult class I have ever taken. The class is designed to get a student ready for college life and realize that everything is at a much faster pace with assignments being assigned daily. Throughout this portfolio it should be clear that in the beginning of the semester I had struggled in my writing and have progressively become better as a writer. Personally, the biggest accomplishment for me was to not procrastinate and gain greater word choice to put in my writing pieces. Having tons of work assigned to you, with all the homework from all other classes that a student has, can be difficult for a student to stay focused and get everything done, and that…

The stories of Jesus are represented through the four New Testament Gospels: Mark, Matthew, Luke, and John. Each Gospel emphasizes on particular principles that represent Jesus differently. Jesus is seen as the suffering Messiah in all four Gospels, but each Evangelist puts in his own intake, hence expanding on the original Markan portrait of Jesus. The writers of the Gospels give their own theological assertions, and understandings, which in effect creates a new portrait of Jesus for each Gospel. The Gospel portraits vary and represent a different and evolving view of Jesus’, stories, and traditions over time.…

In this essay, I will be talking about what I believe to be true from what Jesus tells us in the Bible, about being the Son of God and how He was here to die on the cross for our sins, showing everyone who He was and who ever believe in Him is save, or healed if they were sick. In this paper, I will be talking about the trustworthiness and historicity of the Gospels. The historical reliability of the Gospel accounts of Jesus’ miracles, and did Jesus claim to be God. Did his disciples believe he was God? The accuracy of the resurrection accounts in the Gospels, that is, did Jesus rise bodily from the dead?…
