When comparing and looking at the two poems “Graded Paper” by Mark Halliday and “Learning to Read” by Frances E. W. Harper, you can see that the two are different in many ways. They are two poems from two very distinct time periods. The diverse elements and styles that are used in these poems make them unique in their own way. But, while they have different forms, subjects, word choices, and themes, their overall tones, while not exactly the same throughout the poems, can be seen as similar in a way as they both result in a happy and positive feeling. The poem “Graded Paper” by Mark Halliday is one that might not be easy to understand after just one read. The form and idea behind it can be confusing at first, therefore needing another read or more to fully catch on to what he is saying. The speaker of this poem is a teacher who is, as stated by the title, grading a student’s paper. The speaker starts out the poem by saying, “On the whole this is quite a successful work:”, showing that overall, they enjoyed to student’s paper, giving a hint of a successful, happy tone to the reader. At line 5 though, there is a slight change in the tone when the speaker then says, “At the same time, there are spots when your thinking becomes” and then lists some problems in the student’s paper. …show more content…
W. Harper’s “Learning to Read”, their vast differences in themes, formats, and word styles can make them seem like two completely different poems, but when it comes to it, their overall tones are very similar. “Graded Paper” having the ending where the student gets a good grade on their paper, and “Learning to Read” having the ending where the old slave can finally read and have a place on her own, both leaves them with an overall tone of happiness and positivity. So, even though they are both unique poems in their own way, overall, they are great poems that in the end leave you with a sense of happiness and

Professor Jerry Farber’s article “A Young Person’s Guide to the Grading System” has the intention of persuading college students that the current grading system is not effective by using rhetorical questions to imply its inefficiency, pathos to provoke the reader, and specific diction to help the article resonate with the audience; he even proposes a new grading system. Faber’s solution to the current grading system is to change it entirely, and, in place, have students receive credit or no credit for classes. In this system of grading, receiving a no credit would not have a penalty on the student’s record, but, instead, the records would only have classes where the student earned a credit making this different from the pass-fail grading system.…

Taking criticism can be a difficult thing, but it allows individuals to be guided away from poor practices and be led towards proficient ones. The problem is that our supporters, such as our educators and parents, pass their limits when trying to correct others for their benefit, or in some cases for their own satisfaction, which often leads them to over criticize. This causes individuals such as students and the children of parents to be pushed over the edge, or in very few cases, accept it and honor their selves for their effort. Janice Mirikitan’s “Suicide Note” and Rosemary Catacalos’s “David Talamantez on the Last Day of Second Grade” are two poems that describe how two different characters in similar situations chose to cope with the harsh criticism that they receive from others. In both poems, the characters struggle to meet the expectations of others; however each character receives and copes with the criticism from either their educator, or parents, in distinct ways.…

Poetry is an unusual way of telling a story. It can be used to express feeling or some type of moral or lesson. “Hazel tells Laverne”, by Katharyn Machan tells a unique story filled with nonfiction and fun. To combat this story Edwin Arlington Robinson wrote a more serious story based off of a man living in his town. This poem, “Richard Cory” sheds light on how the views of others towards a person can be so far from the truth.…

Poems happen to be words that mean more than they look. May they express a message, describe someone’s point of view of his/her life or anything, poems are able to do so much with so little. Such is how famous poet of the 19th century Robert Browning managed to do with his writings. Through his writings of My Last Duchess and Porphyria’s Lover, we will look upon the way that he believes men would become alongside women. Replaced for stronger than interesting To start it off, let’s discuss about how Browning’s men view their woman as an object.…

I had to read a few of them a couple times to see what the author was trying to get across, but the way they wrote it was beautiful and empowering. The difference in my experience of reading poetry compared to before this class is being able to understand it. I am now able to read it and just see more than words on a piece of paper, I now see someone’s heart and soul, their feelings, their life. The statements that Billy Collins makes about poetry and literature are that people want instant gratification and do not want to put the effort into trying to understand the work in front of…

In my LIT 200 class I was exposed to two poems by Michael Dickman entitled “Red Migraine” and ‘White Migraine.” I had to analyze both poems and I thought I had a pretty good grasp on what Michael Dickman was saying about life in both the poems, so when I heard he was coming to TCNJ to discuss to do a reading and discuss his poetry I was inclined to go. Overall I can say that Michael Dickman is a very charismatic and humorous person. His poems are witty just like him and require some thinking in order to illicit and genuine feeling from.…

The poem High Summer by John Hodgen critiques the affect prominent poets have on the thinking of future generation and examines the validity of these critiques made on the subjects they write about. In this poem, John Hodgen describes, in a plain spoken and blunt way, Walt Whitman helping wounded Civil War veterans in a makeshift military hospital. He uses candid comparisons to prove his points and alliteration to improve the readability of his poem at the end. In order to understand poems, the reader must have a historical and cultural understanding of the subject manner.…

There are multiple similarities shared between both the poem, A Work of Artifice, by Marge Piercy, and the novel, The Handmaid’s Tale, by Margaret Atwood. The main similarity is in the overall theme present in both pieces, more specifically the theme of power and dominance. This is not to belittle the significance of other similarities between the two, such as their parallel views on feminism, along with sexuality and control. The novel and poem resemble each other in numerous ways; they both shed light on bigger meanings and issues present in the world. The theme of power and superiority is very evident in the two pieces.…

According to poet Rita Dove, “Poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful.” This quote helps us understand why poems come in so many different styles, forms, and subjects. If one thinks of poetry as a whole, perhaps the first poem that surfaces the mind would be a poem in lyrical verse. This more general form of poetry is indeed how the vast majority of poems are written. However, the more classic form of poetry, or perhaps the more ancient form of poetry, is found in epic form, which is known as narrative verse.…
