My whole life happiness has been considered an emotion that I enjoyed experiencing. However, according to chapter ten in our readings, “happiness does not fit most standard definitions of emotions”, although being happy has always been a part of my personality. To me, happiness is considered an emotion because I do not have any other way to describe it. I can agree with the notion of the broaden-and build theory, which states, “positive emotions promote broadened attention so that we are more likely to notice opportunities in the environment, as well as greater flexibility in the actions we might take to maximize those opportunities” (240). At the age of nine months I began walking early and talking. Before I went to preschool my mother would read to me and I started learning my alphabet and numbers 1 through 20 by the age of two. Since I enjoyed social interactions, finally having the opportunity to be exposed to more opportunities made me happy as a young child. I enjoyed learning new things because it was an experience that I was used to at home except now there were more children my age and I was involved in more activities. Starting with learning about different shapes, numbers colors, to playing with paint and crayons, to building with blocks, and playing tag, a game where one child chases another or many because they are “it”. Social interaction and having more opportunities to learn were elicitors that made me happy during my youth. Even around the age of six my mother began teaching me how to do chores around the house on my own such as washing my dirty laundry, taking out the trash, and washing the dishes. She would also like for me to be able to talk and relate to people from all worlds of life. For example, to be able to relate to those that are less fortunate as myself as well as be able to communicate well with more fortunate college students from different backgrounds. So far I can say that I am on the right track because of my own background. My mother hopes that I experience happiness the most because it is an emotion that I have also shared with others. It is an emotion that has pushed me through school, my triumphs, and part of the reason for my success. My mothers desire for me is currently different from hers because of the choices she made when she was my age. While we are not on completely different paths I have more opportunities to do the activities that pleases me, such as travel to other countries, and enjoy myself anytime because I have less responsibilities than her.
