Analyzing Ernest Callenbach's Ecotopia

In English 109H, I was expecting to read arduous novels and evaluate them each week. However, this class was structured on helping the students become more efficient writers and discovering true potential. This class gave various tools, such as peer review, teacher meetings, and in class discussions to aid the student to exceed their previous writing for every major assignment. Through scrutinizing the text, analyzing sources, and making effective arguments I have become exceeded my previous writing ability. In the unit one assignment, students were expected to analyze Ernest Callenbach’s novel Ecotopia and support their argument. I learned about the writing process through the creation of my final thesis. The thesis, or the argument for the paper, is what confused me …show more content…
This assignment taught me how to effectively analyze sources and become unbiased. Before the unit two assignment, I had no idea what ethos, pathos, and logos were. In addition, to be unbiased on a subject that was clearly catered to one side seemed illogical to me. However, due to teacher conferences I was able to grasp the purpose of the assignment. After I analyzed the sources I began to make connections I never had before. For example, one source, an in-person interview, worked for a specific company and everything they said was biased in that company’s favor. Before the assignment, I would have thought that was simply good work on the source’s part. After the assignment, I realized that the spokesperson was using the company 's ethos in order to convince me of their side. This taught me to look at why a fact was created, who created it, and what purpose does it have. This allows me to become unbiased and more informed when looking at facts presented.     Throughout “The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano” I believe that Equiano did a really good job using the three modes because at the end of the narrative I felt like he was telling me the truth of what really happened.
