English Composition Honors 1010 set out to instruct and improve on the writing skills on its students focusing of five learning outcomes. Here is my story. This semester my writing has evolved due to my understanding of context in relation to writing format and styles. Through my own self-evaluation of my own papers, this passed semester I’ve overcome stagnation as a writer. I’ve moved on from my algorithmic method of churning out essays, which often leads to writer’s block. Since then, I have begun to adopt more heuristic techniques. These flexible guidelines have made writing essays that support my thesis easier, for I’m not constrained to a rigid blueprint. Along with this new found flexibility, adaption in tone and style has been made immensely …show more content…
The context and tone will determine whether a bold statement comes across as satirical or crass. I explored this idea in my research paper titled Contextual Relation of Writing. I theorized that the words written mean little compared to the context in which stated in. The results from my experiment and interview affirmed my hypothesis. Words alone only function to partial efficacy unless in the proper context. For example in a dramatic scene, “words can be used to evoke an emotional response if they build on top of each other to set up their own framework and then deliver a trigger word that conveys the intended response” (pg. 16). If no context is applied the words aren’t as powerful. Establishing this desired context was where I struggled. My papers regardless of the topic all held the same straight forward factual tone. However, it wasn’t until the first several in class writing assignments that I realized this fact, and from there I knew the changes …show more content…
I don’t have the heuristic practice or experience to properly determine when to end paragraphs and start the next one. This issue extends into my revision process, for I analyze the paper and lack a framework to compare the content to. I need more experience working with this new heuristic method of writing. Currently, I’m not using a true heuristic writing form. I’m just writing without a framework of any kind. I believe a middle ground between my logarithmic writing style and this new freeform style would be the most beneficial in developing a truly heuristic writing style. The important thing for my growth as a writer revolves around the continued learning and adaption, for eventually I’ll grasp the new skills and settle into my own preferred writing style, format, and tone. Once that point has been reached, I may need to revert back to logarithmic writing to find which works best for me, then from there I can focus on the next phase for improving as a

This should not always be used as you improve as a writer, you should also redevelop your procedure for writing. “What critics of the five-paragraph model should be objecting to is not that it is a formula, but that it is a weak formula” (Birkenstein & Graft 1). This quote separates different types of methodologies and demonstrates not all formulas are impractical but, there are more advantageous methods for different situations. As a high school student, I was never a particularly strong writer, I often lacked direction and the poetic language in my works. However, what the five paragraph essay did for me what guide me as a beginner to able to write my idea in an organized manner.…

Throughout the semester of English Composition I, I learned any new things. Over the past few months I have learned many new tips on how to create a good paper. Although I gained much knowledge over the past few months I did struggle with a few things such as formulating a written thesis statement expressing my main point in the composition, producing rough drafts preliminary to the final draft, applying transition strategies to organize the entire composition cohesively and coherently, and overall practicing various prewriting strategies, such as thinking, brainstorming, listing, and freewriting.…

During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

I have learned how to use neutral language, write complete thesis statements, how to put my own tone and voice in my writing, and how to critique my own paper. How to use neutral language was the most difficult skill to learn over the semester. “Standardized tests can be viewed by teachers, students, and parents, as helpful for the school system or detrimental to one’s academic future”. This opening sentence from my Informational Argumentative Essay is a perfect illustration of how my neutral language showed both sides of the argument but did not actually take a side. “Spiro Theodore Agnew used logos, pathos, and ethos to successfully get his point across to the millions of Americans listening to him that the news is giving out twisted information”.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

In the beginning, I looked at the different ways of preparing for a paper and one stuck out to me. I would write an outline of what I wanted to write about and then I would make sub-headings under each bulletin describing what each topic would talk about. I used this process more with my research papers than with the narrative essays because I could see what facts I needed to look up and which ones I already knew. For the non-research essays, I wrote the first sentence to every paragraph first. After that I would write an outline of what I wanted to talk about in each paragraph.…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…
