Enclosed in this portfolio is a collection of my work that shows my growth and progression as a writer throughout the semester. The pieces displayed in this portfolio are the four major assignments we completed over the semester: the investigative field essay, annotated bibliography and literature review, rhetorical analysis, and the multimodal proposal and project. Each assignment encompasses a topic that relates back to my major as chemistry, or my projected occupation as a pharmacist. I hope to have my assignments demonstrate key skills I have gained within ENC 2135: compose texts that integrate the writer’s ideas with sources; analyzing and interpreting complex texts and representations of meaning in a variety of formats; and understanding how genre …show more content…
Getting a start on this paper was challenging as I had no idea how to tackle all of the research and interviews, and then compile all of the information I gathered in a cohesive document. Through countless hours of research, interviews, drafting, and revising I created a document I was confident in turning in. Peer reviews and time allotted in class to complete this paper set me at ease, allowing me to complete the essay on time. My final product truly encompassed what my life will be like as a chemistry major and in the pharmaceutical field. I was pleased how the essay flowed between credentials, interviews, and research I conducted beforehand. I believe my work for this assignment correlates with the goal, ‘compose texts that integrate the writer’s ideas with sources,’ stated on the syllabus. I believe the introduction to my investigative field essay demonstrates my integration of research into my own words as a writer, as show in the photo excerpt below of my investigative field essay. This assignment allowed me to explore my major and ultimately in the end it gave me the idea of changing my major to something else in the science

I am a registered pharmacy technician and have practised in community pharmacy for almost 6 years in the UK. The services that the pharmacy was providing were like where I had previously worked and all the standard operating procedures were similar. However, during the placement, I could see the pharmacist’s point of view rather than a technician and how the role of the pharmacist is different from that of a pharmacy technician. The pharmacist’s role was more focused on the clinical aspect, rather than just dispensing and ordering medication. I learnt how to recruit patients who are eligible for Medicines Use Review (MUR) and New Medicines Service (NMS).…

The occupation that I decided to use for the Domestic Associates Project is a Pharmacist. I chose this career option because I think it would be a good fit for me. The general task of a Pharmacist includes analyzing and assessing a patient's condition to choose the best prescription and treatment options for a patient. I think I would like this job because it requires close personal care for a patient, in depth logical thinking, and an understanding of the how chemicals react with each other and the human body. Fortunately all of these tasks fit what I am looking for in an occupation or are something I think I could do well.…

Since the beginning of my first year at school I have been learning to read and write. Throughout these years I have had a lot of experiences with reading and writing. All through high school we would write responses and essays over books we read. Once I entered college everything changed; I began to learn about writers and people who were known because of their great works of literature. In college, you are held to a higher standard and responsibility than you are in high school; this challenge has encouraged me to work hard and because of this I have become better at writing.…

After struggling with the first writing assignment, I had to quickly adapt my writing habits to meet the new expectations. My progression as a writer is best documented by all the intermediary assignments leading up to the final version of Essay 1. Formulating a valid argument about the spice trade – a topic difficult to relate to – was not an easy task for me. I originally struggled coming up with an idea for my thesis despite extensive brainstorming. When writing the thesis, I instinctively reverted back to my old high school habits and wrote it in a five-paragraph structure.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

Prior to taking ENL 110, I was concerned if I would be able to handle a college writing course. Growing up in the inner-city it was difficult to learn the basic foundations of writing such as grammar and punctuation. As an avid reader, I have had only my ears to rely on to make the appropriate corrections and build sentences. I stepped into the course afraid to write papers, but I was hungry to learn my weaknesses and strengths. This portfolio is a reflection of the progress I have made since I started this course to the brutal end.…

I grew greatly in my writing over the course of this year. Previously, I wrote based on instinct and in the style to which I adjusted; since starting AP Language & Composition, I’ve developed a certain writing foundation and learned to write with a much more defined purpose. Before this course, I often tried to cover given topics to the best of my ability, but I struggled as I lacked enough of a background in the technical skill necessary for writing to successfully cover all of the bases. I did not recognize the variety of skill sets needed to write all the different genres that existed in the realm of writing; I just wrote in a consistent, similar style for each and every assignment I wrote, even if my style didn’t satisfy the requirements of that specific essay.…

As I sat anxiously in my desk the last day of high school, I felt compelled and overwhelmed to decide what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare because of my mother, who was a registered nurse. Witnessing the love and care my mother had for every patient even when she was not on the clock really inspired the drive for me to impact the lives of others just as I saw her do. Although after I shadowed one of my mother’s colleagues, I knew I could not handle the gory aspects that are associated with most healthcare professions; however, this shadowing experience led me to discover my initial desire to help others and make a difference. I owe my foremost interest in pursuing a career in pharmacy to my paternal grandparents.…
