When we read books we read from the perspective from which we see life. It is very unlikely that two people will read the same book and pick up the same details. Depending on what perspective people are reading from it may seem like they are reading two different literary works. I read The Sword in the Stone for high school English, and we focused on chivalry, knighthood, and the caste system of the era. When I read The Sword in the Stone I see myself in Arthur. Arthur and I both went further than our status dictates. While overcoming our status, we both quested for our education. King Pelanore can be found multiple times in The Sword in the Stone questing after the questing beast. Arthur’s quest started as a hunt for Kay’s hawk until Kay abandoned him. “Let him go then.”(White 17) Arthur made the decision to continue, even sleeping on the ground “he snuggled down between the roots of the tree…” (White 19) Arthur did not know that in continuing into the forest that he would find his tutor Merlin. “Are you really coming all the way home with me? …How else will I be your tutor?” (White 37) At that point Arthur’s eyes got big and he realized that he had been on a quest. Arthur did not know what he was questing for, but he found what he needed. In modern society we don’t use the word quest much outside of role playing games, however the definition still applies. It was a 255 mile drive from my previous home in Plano to the school here. I didn’t sleep under any trees, but I did stay in an extended stay hotel. I didn’t know what this town would have to offer, or if I would get into the school here, I did know that this is where my fiancé lived, and at that point I would follow him anywhere. I like Arthur didn’t know what was to come at the end of this journey, but just like Arthur I deemed it important to move forward in what I felt I was supposed to do. I did not do what I came down here to do as I am not married to my
