I attended the concert in the Singletary Recital Hall in Lexington, KY. Located on the University of Kentucky campus it is the home of an art museum and recital hall. Many music majors spend time in this venue honing their listening and performing skills. The individual who performed today was a member of the University of Kentucky faculty. The hall was a great venue to enjoy classical music. There was plenty of seating available, audience was excellent and they were very respectful to the performer. The hall was designed specifically for the performance of classical music and very little to no distortion when the performer hit notes with very high resonance.

Composition I liked Best: The composition that I enjoyed the most was Concerto for Trumpet by Johann Hummel. This piece has three movements, allegro con spirit, andante, and rondo. It was written in 1803 during the classical period. When I selected the concert to attend the details of what would be played weren’t readily available. Essentially I went into the concert blind but I quickly realized that

Johann Hummel at one point was an opera director, because of that we here material of the operas that were common during his time (Phillips, 2008). Phillips (2008) discusses the important aspects of each movement of Concerto for Trumpet. As for movement III, he considers that there are three styles; contredanse, march and gavotte. Movement II is considered an “aria for the soloist” (Phillips, 2008). I would agree with this based on the feeling that I received by listening to movement II, a slow methodically moving segment with a significant amount of sadness. According to Phillips (2008) Hummel contrasts two opera genres, buffa and seria. This is important due to the fact that this piece was written in a pastiche type of way, different elements of other musical works were used to construct the Concerto for Trumpet (Phillips,

He became an assistant composer for Nicola Porpora and was named the court musician in the Esterházy family, and became accustomed to being isolated from other composers. Since he was isolated from the musical trends of the world, his works were unique, which is one of the reasons why he is the most influential composer in history.…

The live performance of Haydn’s String Quartet in C major, Op. 76, No. 3 “Emperor” Allegro was more enjoyable than the recording. Just like the first piece, the conductor introduced the piece, made a signal and the lights dimmed. For this number, the violin was played first, followed by the Harp, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Trumpet and Flute. This piece commenced off lento but reached tempo over time. I experienced allegro in the middle of the piece which created a storytelling feel in my head. I suggest that the overall dynamics of this piece was pp—mp—mf—f—ff, with a theme and variation form.…

Furthermore, the concerto’s dialogue between the solo flute and orchestra is a trademark of Classical era music. The dialogue is noticeable throughout the piece, creating intimacy and excitement. Also, the solo line is clear and the accompaniment does not overshadow it. Lastly, the flute’s faster and more rhythmically involved sections sound improvised and transcend time and space as the strings soar above it. Improvisation is arguably the most expressive form of music, because when musicians improvise they are “play[ing] from the soul” as CPE Bach said.…
