The Themes Of Self Awareness And Self-Change

Superior Essays
The first project for the personal adjustment class revolves around the themes of self-awareness and self-change. The aim of the project is to develop a deeper understanding of one’s self via analysis of one’s moods, thoughts, and behaviors. The project is divided into three stages with each lasting one week for a total project length of three weeks. This paper will describe how each step is executed and summarize all of the corresponding materials. The project, naturally, begins with stage one which is essentially the journaling stage. In this stage I had to journal every day for seven days my thoughts, moods, and feelings about the day. The goal of this stage was to identify potential avenues for stage two. During my week of journaling, …show more content…
In my case I focused and journaled about my use of swearing. For another week, I had to journal about my use of vocabulary and keep track of how many times a day I used swear word. Due to the big scope of stage two I established a few rules that would help me ensure that I complete the project: 1) got an accountability-buddy; 2) set up consequences; 3) and had a list of alternative word for common swear words. In addition to my own recordings, I did research and looked-for metrics that I could compare. Logistics aside, stage two proved to be challenging due to having to consciously think about counting and keeping track of all swear words used. I used a simple check system to monitor swear-word usage supplemented by friends, family, and co-works keeping their own …show more content…
The constant journaling helped me identify that the more I used swear words it was easier for me to respond in a more aggressive manner because I didn’t have to stop and go through the thought process. Vice versa, the more I tried to substitute the swear words, it helped me reflect on what I wanted to say; therefore, allowing myself time to calm down and truly evaluate the situation. The project was very helpful in identifying major revolving themes and provides a starting point for further

First Stone Analysis Essay A human’s potential to change is incomprehensible; it could either elevate or degrade a person. When a major change occurs in one’s life, it completely changes one’s character, attitude and perspective. This essay will be using the book First Stone by Don Aker as an academic reference. The book shows the potential of change in a very dignified of ways which helped develop my own opinion on the concept of the potential of change. Timothy jay, professor of psychology at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, performed a study on the science of swearing, and he talked about the age children learn to swear. In the article, Professor Jay wrote, “swearing emerges by age two and becomes adult-like by ages 11 or 12. By the time children enter school, they have a working vocabulary of 30-40 offensive words,”. This shows that parents don’t need to worry about protecting their teenage child from profanity, because odds are the child already has heard this type of language countless times, so reading it in a book will not affect them a lot. Professor Jay also mentions that most young adults claimed their swearing vocabulary was learned from listening to their parents, peers, and siblings.…

Our textbook defines this process as requiring “you to monitor your own verbal and nonverbal cues, in addition to the cues from the audience with each communication interaction” (Quintanilla, Wahl, p. 22). Caleb could have used this part of KEYS by understanding that he is in a more diverse environment and thus subject to different rules of communication and appropriate language. If Caleb understood this, he should have been proactive in asking whether his language would be perceived as hateful and asked what a more acceptable term would when referring to those of Hispanic descent. As Dr. Allen stated, “we learn communication styles and rules based on our membership in certain groups, and we communicate with other people based on how we have been socialized about ourselves and about them” (Allen, p. 16). Because Caleb grew up using the term Mexican to refer to all Hispanics, he was socialized that this was not offensive language.…

Johnson uses Expectancy Violation Theory and violation valence to explain how people perceive swearing, specifically in the workplace. Johnson notes that the basic premise of EVT is that individuals enter into an interaction with expectancies about how each person will behave; when these expectancies are violated, individuals experience arousal. A central tenet of EVT is that this arousal can be either positive or negative in valence. This is any behavior that falls outside a range of expected behaviors is theorized to produce cognitive arousal and trigger an interpretation-evaluation sequence that helps individuals cope with unexpected outcomes. Moreover, given the importance of violation valence in evaluating an expectancy violation…

The self-reflection recording was a long questionnaire that was given in the beginning of this course. The questionnaire involved a range of questions and topics from definitions to how we view our race. This recording gave me a much deeper view of how I felt about my own race, and the way I view the world. The second part of the self-reflection is a way to see the personal growth and change that has occurred within the span of this course. This self-reflection will provide my view and opinion on how I think I have changed, or have not changed, during my time in this course.…

Self reflection is the mental process that acquires knowledge and understanding through thoughts and experience which helps encourage self awareness. This essay focuses on assessing my objectives and how I have developed my skills from the beginning of this semester until now. At the start of semester A, I wasn’t confident in preparing for the skills sessions and workshops. I wasn 't always able to find the correct answers to the workshop questions set which made it relatively difficult for me to participate in lectures despite finding myself at the library every other day. I began by listening to knowledge based lectures online and making notes alongside the recommended reading given by my lecturers or the module guide.…
