Period Piece Reflection

Improved Essays
After watching, Period Piece, one thing is clear, if you're 15 or 80 it seems like you never forget what it was like when you first started your period. There is also another common theme between the array of women in the film, the inadequateness in which they were prepared for such a momentous occasion.
My story is no different than many of the women featured in the film. I was one of the last of my friends to get their period and consequently, I was able to piece information together from their horror stories. I know my mother and I discussed menstruation, but it was very briefly and I do not remember our discussion in detail. Our school took all 5th grade students to the McMillen Center to learn about the "birds and the bees." At the time, I found this too technical and confusing. I left with many questions and I was too embarrassed to inquire about details.
One of my most impactful memories in regards to menstruation happened when I was in 7th grade. We were

I skipped the maxi pads and went right for the tampons, convinced that I would never have to sit out from swimming because of a silly tampon. I did not have the difficulty with insertion that my friend did, and because of that, felt so mature. However, when it came time to take the tampon out, I was unable to do so. I tried for an hour, in various positions and in various ways. At this point in time my family did not have internet; I could have really used google. I had to resort to calling my mom and having her remove it. It was quite humiliating for a girl that felt so grown up just an hour ago. She quietly showed me the pads and suggested I use them until I got a bit older. Northrup, in her column, "The Body at Puberty," recommends girls use pads initially until her periods become more regular. She goes on to discuss the rapid growth the cervix undergoes and that tampons may cause irritation there. If I only

While I have not had nearly as many hardships in my life as Jeannette Walls in her book The Glass Castle, there are still some things that her and I have in common. Throughout the book, Walls endured many struggles while traveling with her dysfunctional family. Jeannette’s father is constantly getting in the way of her success, from stealing her money to not always making her go to school. Eventually, she leaves her parents behind and makes her way to New York City, where she goes to college and finds success. Similar to how Jeannette had to overcome the obstacles between her and her success, her parents in The Glass Castle, I had to overcome the obstacle between me and my success, my bones.…

    Curanderismo Reflection

Curanderismo has been a presence in my life since I was very young. Growing up in a small community in Northern New Mexico ensured that I was exposed to traditional medicine and alternative forms of spirituality. This class was not my first exposure to curanderismo, though many of the readings and videos helped clarify and explain many of the elements of curanderismo that had been present in my life, but had not been explained. Curanderismo is just as much of a form of cultural expression as it is a form of traditional healing. Personally, curanderismo is a link to my cultural and family history, helping to continue traditions that my family has had for generations.…

I demonstrated leadership at the waterfront festival by presenting the importance and safety of keeping water clean. I expressed this by keeping the students focused, letting them engage in hands on experiments, and answering all their questions to help them get a better understanding of what was happening. These leadership skills helped me earn respect from each student. One of the ways I demonstrated leadership while presenting to the students was making sure they were focused on my presentation.…

On the early Saturday morning, October 3, 2015, I took the Blue and Gold Ferry from pier 41 of San Francisco to Angel Island to attend a Nikkei Pilgrimage organized by the Nichi Bei Foundation. Since I grew up and got educated in San Francisco, Angel Island is not a strange place for me. Throughout the years, I have taken many school field trips to Angel Island to learn about the tragic history of the island. I have learned about the “Chinese’s Angel Island experience” so I am familiar with the historical perspective of the Chinese immigration’s struggle while they were detained the island. I was anxious to attend this event because I did not have any knowledge on the Japanese that were detained on the Angel Island.…

I attended the Queens College Orchestra in the LeFrak Concert Hall on October 26th, 2016. Since this is my first semester at Queens College, this was also my first time attending a classical concert and an event in LeFrak concert hall, which is a very stunning place. It was interesting to see how the performers were setting up and practicing (all at the same time so there a lot of instruments playing and jumbled noises all together). There was a woman in the center of the stage who played a cello, and her musical role seemed to be very important because she was dressed in a nice dress, unlike the usual black outfit the performers usually wear. The title of the program notes is “Life, Loss, and Death”, and I can see how the three pieces chosen…

I have mixed feelings on how to react to Wolters’ writing. Wolters takes what may seem like something that all reformational Christians should already know and reinforces this classical worldview in a useful way. The musings of Wolters have been the integral backbone of my entire educational experience over my years at Dordt. However, I have never been formally introduced to these concepts before starting college. This may be obvious to anyone who knows me, but up until a couple of years ago, I had never heard of the terms, “reformational,” “worldview,” “structure and direction,” or even “creation, fall, redemption.…

    3. Systematic Reflection: The clearest systemic social forces at play in this case are racism and classism. I do not wish to highlight either of these as judgments on the congregation. They are, in my mind, a natural byproduct of a diverse community that came of age in an era unaccustomed to systemic reflection. On more than one occasion conversation has turned to “the Indians” who are just “waiting for us to close this church so they can get the land.”…

Martin reveals the raw feelings of the science textbook authors behind the completely natural process of menstruation. Martin goes into detail about how women are viewed as baby producers and if they fail to accomplish that task, according to the textbooks, they have failed to fulfill their womanly duty (486). Martin provides a clear example of a women feeling inferior, when she says “In the case of women, the monthly cycle is described as being designed to produce eggs and prepare a suitable place for them to be. Fertilized and grown-all to the end of making babies. But the enthusiasm ends there” (486).…

In this musical it is safe to say that there are many types of tones throughout the show. For example, two types of tones we discussed in class were formal and informal. To me and I’m sure many others, the students created this very playful environment while they were acting and singing.…

I spent the fall semester of 2016 as a first-year student at Bucknell University. I found most of my classes, with the exception of one were easy, and I did not feel that I was being sufficiently challenged, academically or intellectually. Additionally, the school was too small and could not offer the opportunities and experiences, such as internships, jobs, community and volunteer work, that I desired. The area surrounding the school did not stimulate or excite me, in the way that a city would. I decided after only a semester, to withdraw from Bucknell and am at home for the spring semester.…

This week was a challenge for me. Being halfway through the semester now, I am really starting to feel the pressure of online classes. 1.) I believe that Steinem‘s main message in her article If Men Could Menstruate is to show us that how we understand what is normal and acceptable about our bodies is very much culturally dictated. Steinem proposes that “the characteristics of the powerful, whatever they may be, are thought to be better than the characteristics of the powerless”(pg.209). Menstruating would no longer be connected to impurity or weakness if it were a male trait. It is only connected to these things because it is associated to the less powerful sex.…
