Reflection On Group Communication

While exploring the chapters and really diving into the material this semester it was interesting to see how the groups have played out. Particularly in my group, we have individuals with very similar and different circumstances working with one another. As a group, we have set task dimensions such as getting the collective nine hours of community service done, then getting our proof of the hours, completing our papers, and successfully delivering a group project to our peers before the end of the semester or due dates. These are the clear cut circumstances we have been placed into as group the moment we selected to work with one another. The relationships that created quite quickly within our group are also a very interesting aspect of our …show more content…
As communication majors, I thought we would have had an easier time at setting goals, overcoming objectives, and concisely getting our points across in the group. This wasn’t the case as we began at all. Communicating our stances only took us so far into moving forward as a group. It started to become clear after each week passed and we would talk about all the different options that we could be exploring, how we would go about implementing these different options and strategizing our schedules to accommodate for the events. Sadly, all we seemed to do was talk about among each other about similar ideas each week, and different group members would come back with excuses for why it didn’t happen. I realize looking back that I had a hindsight bias in the case of my group members’ abilities to communicate. I made the assumption that they must be looking at the issue like I was because I figured we are all relatively the same as far as considering our communication training. We were as a unit being social loafers in the beginning and waiting to see how things would play out. Which wasn’t too effective of a process. It wasn’t until we finally set a goal for our group that we started to be effective in accomplishing one of our fist …show more content…
This is clearly reflected in chapter three that “the output from a group 's task dimensions is productivity” (Book, pg. 79). We saw this when we accomplished the nine hours the next weekend at the local duck pond here in town. While we were able to successfully achieve the task dimension aspect of our group development quite successfully and efficiently. I do not believe that we are a cohesive group by any means. “Cohesiveness is the degree to which members feel a part of the group, wish to stay in the group, and are committed to each other and to the group’s work” (Lanfred, 1998; Wech et al., 1998). As a group we have yet to develop that relationship in my opinion that would classify cohesiveness. We have not had the time to truly develop a more personal relationship as a whole. To correct this, I feel we could do a get-together and talk more about the project and how are semesters have progressed so far. Something that would open the door up for more intimate/personal conversation between group members to develop the relational satisfaction for the group. The overall objective would be encouraging compatible membership like stated in the textbook will allow us to “enjoy each other 's company and share an attraction for one another (Book, 2015 pg 80).” We also established shared goals for our

The main challenge of this group situation is that there was a sudden rise of conflict among members at the beginning to mid phase of the project. This resulted the possible development of groupthink (Janis, 2008). As a leader in this situation, I would firstly feel lousy and disappointed in myself that I didn’t take note of group’s division and how the meeting could be more inclusive of everyone’s opinion (Chadha, 2016). However, at that point, I would also probably feel confused but yet curious as to why it was suddenly voiced out, hence thought that I should facilitate to explicit the thoughts and feelings of each member to better understand as well.…

I would direct them by leading the discussion and sharing new information. Of course I would not do this skill unless I had the groups consent (Toseland, R.W., & Rivas, R.F. 2012, p. 119). Then I would use expressive skills by using self-disclosure. Doing this could help the group open up about difficult communications (Toseland, R.W., & Rivas, R.F. 2012, p. 112 &113). I will meet the group’s leadership responsibility in ensuring that each person gets roughly the same amount of attention in the group.…

One important factor of cohesion is group size. Many studies have shown that small to moderate group sizes, 3 to 5 members, show the greatest level of cohesiveness (Crocker, 2016; Grieve et al., 2000; Yarmey, 2013). Furthermore, large groups are more prone to social loafing, which is a reduction in individual effort when people believe others will pull their weight (Crocker, 2016). Social loafing, and therefore large groups can have a negative effect on cohesiveness.…

A number of years ago, I started having severe abdominal pain. I made an appointment and the physician informed me that the pain was being caused by a pregnancy that occurred very quickly after a miscarriage. I accepted this information without question. At 31 weeks, I went into preterm labor and spent the next four and a half weeks in and out of the hospital and in and out of labor. My baby was born premature, but was healthy enough to go home the same day I did.…

In starting off this week’s journal entry and as it relates to my effectiveness as a group participant, I would, similarly to last week’s session say this week’s session to be a good illustrator of effective group participation, yes. In contrast, however, I would say this session to be one of my best demonstrations of effective group participation. In an effort to explain the above as well as get into the activities of this week’s session, this week’s opener asked of one to reflect on what has kept them going, kept them motivated when they reflect on their successful completion of the past semester that has upgraded them to the current semester and then now being in the second month of the second semester what has kept that “engine” going.…

In terms of group cohesiveness, I felt that we were quite unified. Each member had different roles in the group which made everyone of us indispensable and we cooperate well with one another. We were all assigned with different tasks based on our strengths and collaborated in such a way that we were able to complement each other’s lacking. As a whole, I would consider the dynamics and processes in our group as constructive. Our group dynamic and processes can be further described through the concept of leadership, conformity and planning fallacy.…

Reflection Paper II Throughout my college experience here in the Carroll School of Management, group work and the ability to work well with others has been emphasized greatly. This makes sense, because in a professional environment, the ability to communicate, listen and contribute within a group leads to success and the achievement of goals. However, none have gone on as long as this project, making it a more realistic example of working on a team. Junior year of college is definitely a crazy time, as we are forced to balance heavy workloads with extracurriculars and recruiting.…

I have been taking this class for nearly three months. During three months, I learned a lot about small group communication, especially the group climate and interaction are going well in our group. Our group works well on building and keeping positive attitude to our assignments and supportive climate. Each group member devotes to create an atmosphere that our group is the best group. For instance, our group member Erik and Jo always said some words of praise and encouragement, such as “we are really a good group”.…
