What does it mean to be a part of a discourse community? Discourse communities can be more than just an organization. It can be a tiny group, a big group, or basically anybody who socially communicates with a couple of friends on the regular. People come together explaining what their organizations is about and how they work. People use Discourse Communities to understand different languages that involve certain understandings. Without a Discourse Community, there wouldn 't be any way to communicate. With many observations, emails, flier 's, interviews, and group messaging, this communication proves that African Student Association is, in fact, a Discourse Community according to Swales 's six characteristics.

This explains that there is a specific way the Discourse Community communicates that majority of other people wouldn’t get. For example, The University of Memphis has a pride song that only a true Tiger would know. The pride was written and sung for the University of Memphis as for the Kansas State pride song is written and sung for only Kansas State. The pride song identifies what and who it belongs to. The sixth characteristic states, “A discourse community has a threshold level of members with a suitable degree of relevant content and discoursal expertise” (222). This explains that a new member who enters a discourse community comes in with little knowledge then leaves with a higher rank of knowledge of what the community is mostly about. For example, after leaving eighth-grade middle school, a person upgrades to a higher level, a high school freshman.
