This explains that there is a specific way the Discourse Community communicates that majority of other people wouldn’t get. For example, The University of Memphis has a pride song that only a true Tiger would know. The pride was written and sung for the University of Memphis as for the Kansas State pride song is written and sung for only Kansas State. The pride song identifies what and who it belongs to. The sixth characteristic states, “A discourse community has a threshold level of members with a suitable degree of relevant content and discoursal expertise” (222). This explains that a new member who enters a discourse community comes in with little knowledge then leaves with a higher rank of knowledge of what the community is mostly about.
