Community Band Speeches

Standing in front of a crowd, nerves shaking as I, a soon to be junior in high school, have decided to conduct for a community band. I had stepped up since the band was going to have a "year off" and had been working for several weeks with a small group of students. I found the venue, rehearsal hall, times, and the arrangements. The students and myself had put in long hours and the day had come to perform in front of the community. As I stepped up, I saw the nervous faces that I taught and smiled, turned around and introduced the band to the community. As the concert came to a close, students came up and thanked me, along with other people in the community; but the memory that sticks with me is the light that shines from the student when they accomplish a task that was previously believed they could not complete. It was at that very moment that I decided I wanted to be a teacher, to see that spark light and grow in every student that I will teach.
Teaching has always drawn me, but it was in that moment that I truly understood I wanted to do this for the rest of my life. I want to be a rock for my students, challenge them, encourage them to follow their dreams, and watch that spark grow into a fire. Through my experiences in living overseas, leading groups, volunteering, and coaching in the WKCTA, I came across the qualities that I saw in my teachers. The major ones that have grow since I was little have been diversity, accepting, animated, remembering names, passionate, and a listener. These qualities are just the beginning to the bountiful amounts of qualities and techniques that I am learning in college.
