Reflection: Occupation Therapist

Decent Essays
In the last August I moved to Bay Path University to start my three weeks in the summer classes that we called brain boot camp, This is the first part of the program of Occupation Therapist. I had the three hard weeks in the last couple years. It was very intensive program with classes 5 days a week, 8 am until 5 pm, after that a lot homework to finish and a lot of projects to complete. In my last couple days just one of the professors do not post the grades, this made me very anxious because I knew this can decide my future in the program. After my last day I started my week vacation without the grades and the results about my future. My worst day happen in my last day of my week vacation when I received the grades from my last summer class.

When I started working as a CAN, as well as volunteering in the health care field, I understood that the work involved included helping residents in activities of daily living. What I found out after I started working was how much of an impact the job makes on people. When I was volunteering to help a woman go grocery shopping I did not think much of it. However, when I came into her home and started putting her groceries away she started tearing up. I found out that she and her husband used to always go grocery shopping together and would later play a game that involved putting the groceries away.…

I believe that the differences in our responses to the performance task of taking care of ourselves, result from the way that we each see the tasks that fall under this category. I see these tasks as an opportunity to have some time to relax, either before I start my day or at the end of it, my father does anything expect relax when doing these tasks. He sees these tasks as time slots. When he needs to do these tasks that he already believes are unimportant, that he could be and should be doing something else. While is washing his face, he thinks of all the things that he needs to do that morning or what he needs to do before he goes to bed and these tasks take up time he could be doing that.…

A career is an occupation for a certain period of time of a person’s working life. You may have multiple careers during your life depending on your interests and skills. Three jobs that I am interested in are physical therapy, sports medicine and veterinarian. I chose these careers because they are really interesting and they benefit other people and even animals. Physical therapists (PT) are professionals that work on the rehabilitation of patients of all ages and teach their patients how to manage their condition.…

Role Play Reflection Before doing the video, I became somewhat anxious at the thought of being on camera; knowing that I was going to be evaluated did not help my anxiety at all. After all, I am an introvert; even at that I love listening to people talk about their life’s experiences, and love to help them resolve their issues whenever possible. This is one reason I am looking forward to learning more about the social work field. I have always been careful at how much advice I offer a person; even more so now, after this class, because I recognize that if a worker is not prepared to help in the proper way she can do more harm than good to all the parties involved in the process. I am also aware that I am a social work student, and that my…

Thus far, I have learned many important aspects of becoming an effective therapist. One of the major parts of training involves evaluation and feedback from supervisors or peers. I think evaluations are an important part of training because it provides feedback to areas, which you are doing well in, and areas in which you will need improvement. I believe that without evaluations, we as therapist cannot grow into effective therapist. To date I cannot think of any job or career that does not use “end of the year evaluations”.…

An exercise in class allowed me to understand my own reasoning for helping others as well as what may be my own selfish reasons for seeking this profession. For example, at one point in the exercise, I broke ground into my own self-assessment and found insight that I was partially seeking the profession for money and for my savior complex. I felt that this observation of myself showed that I was overall, functioning normally with both healthy and minimal unhealthy motivations. Another concern that came across my mind is when I have a…

In matching Janet’s posture, language and tone, I reflected back to Janet her external behaviours. When I commented to Janet “and because you know that at the base of it’s not you it’s him” I put into my words her thoughts regarding his behaviour. Janet’s response of “well that’s the thing, I don’t let it affect me anymore…” allowed her to then explore why her reactions to her ex-husband had changed. I found this skill of counselling particularly difficult in this session due to our friendship.…

I have never experienced therapy, but always had imagined how the process would be. I pictured a couch and a therapist on a fancy chair like in the movies, and I would just lay there and vent about my problems. Initially, I was very excited to see someone whom I can speak with and possibly help me resolve my issues, but that excitement did not last long. Anxiety kicked in as I got a phone call from the therapist, informing me that we would start next week. I started to become very nervous about the whole client-therapist relationship, for what if I did not connect with.…
