Wake Technical Community College is the largest community college in North Carolina. Enrollment reached a record high of 22,000 students for the fall, 2014 (The News & Observer, 2014). Furthermore, a significant number of classes are taught online, and as of last year, more than 3,300 students were in online programs; a number that has doubled within five years (The News & Observer, 2014). According to Bryan Ryan, the Senior Vice President of Curriculum Education Services, states that “while half of the students are interested in the technical programs, many of the other students are interested in transferring to a four-year institution, an option that has become increasingly viable in recent years”.…
I personally think that community college is not easy and I can't even imagine how hard a University may be as well. In college we face a bunch of hard obstacles, challenges, stress, and even wanting to give up easily, but we have to keep our heads up. Based on the article, “5 Pressing Issues Facing Community College Students Today” there are quite a lot of issues students face when attending a community college. For example, the tuition, even though is just two years it’s still expensive.…
My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…
P1) The present day community college used to be known as junior college, and anytime I hear this defining term, I cringe. There is nothing junior about community college these days. Just about anything I can do during my first two years at a four-year college or university, I can also do at my local community college. Many of my friends who went straight to a university after high school.…
Macomb Community College and Barnard College have two very different websites, yet they share a few distinct similarities. Like most college websites, the sites of Barnard and Macomb both have information about their schools. They share information regarding their campuses, their student body and faculty, and what kind of college they are. They both also have places on their websites to find information regarding financial aid and assistance, as well as how to apply for their school. Material can be located on each website that tells about news and events coming up in the community.…
While at a Community College, I have had time to grow and mature into a finer young adult than I came out of High School. I learned to live on my own and take care of myself, while continuing to acquire training and education. It was also a time I took to figure who I am and who I want to be. With that in mind, I have found that I desire to continue growing at a different institution. While I have learned a significant amount of things in my current college and enjoyed every minute of it, I will be graduating from its program soon and wish to explore opportunities elsewhere.…
For most high school seniors one of the most important decisions to make is choosing a college or university that could direct them on the right path toward their career goals. Most people say that going to a big, well-known university is the best way toward success, but are they really? There are actually other options that can lead a graduating senior toward success such as community college. Not only is community college more affordable and close to home, but it can also offer the same opportunities as that a well known university. An example would be Lorain County Community College, offering four-year degrees and having more than a handful of other associate degrees for first-time students.…
Free Community College With the 2016 election on its way, whether or not students should receive free community college has become an endless controversial debate. It is estimated that the number of students currently enrolled in community college is about 7.4 million, with each student paying an average $3,500 per year for tuition (Hosansky). Many students are attending community colleges instead of a traditional four-year university in order to reduce the treacherous mountain of student debt, about $39,950 on average, that they face once they graduate (Konczal). Because of the large amount of debt that students are facing, President Barack Obama has requested that students get free community college as long as they meet certain requirements:…
College: What it Was, Is, and Should Be by Andrew Delbanco (2012) provides a comprehensive chronological overview of higher education from its origins to the present day. Upon reading the title I assumed the subsequent pages would drag on about the failures of higher education and list a fool proof way of correcting said issues, I am happy to announce I was incorrect. In the book’s six short chapters Delbanco manages to take us back in time and review the origins of higher education in order to better understand where we are today. In the first three chapters Delbanco reviews the evolution of college, which originally stirred from religion, and became the way society groomed young men of age. In 1886 founding president of John’s Hopkins stated that college should always be a place for the development of a student’s character (p.42).…
I am interested in the Early College Academy because it is a great opportunity. I understand that I will have to do a lot more work here than in other schools because of the college courses, but that does not matter to me. I will still study and work hard for the duration of my time here. This is the only school in which I can knock off two years of college for free. I also like the schedule here and how it's shorter, but I understand that I will have to use the rest of the time for studying and that's alright for me because in order achieve one's goals one has to work hard and that's what I…
Hannah Adams Dr. Herman Prager TX Government 14 November, 2017 College, What It Was, Is, And Should Be In Andrew Delbanco’s book, College, What It Was, Is, And Should Be, the author explains that students are no longer going to colleges to explore and discover their passions, but instead are attending just to gain an undergraduate degree. He argues that a true education helps students discover themselves. He expresses his concern that many colleges are losing their passion to help students discover themselves and their values, and those that keep up these traditions are becoming a privilege that many cannot afford.…
Athena After spending the last two years at a community college working toward my associates degree, I am transferring this fall to the State University just thirty minutes from home. Well, that 'll be three to four hours away from where I live since I take public transportation to school. I cannot believe I am a nineteen-year-old girl, who graduated at the top of her class in both high school and college, and I am petrified of driving. My body shivers as the memories kick in.…
I took two classes for the summer of 2016, but the Interpersonal Communication class had me worried the most. I had a training with the army, and that required me to absence from school for two weeks. Unlike my other class, I didn’t have a chance to work ahead of the class with the instructor for the two weeks that I would be missing. Therefore, I was worried that I wouldn’t catch up with my classmates and end up failing the class. However, Ms. Anna was generous and extended the assignment due date for me; she even gave me an extra-credit assignment to replace the credits that I missed during my two weeks in training.…
