As I began observing Mrs. Farmer’s classroom at Saint Mary’s Catholic School, I realized private and public education does not differ in many ways. When I took the time to interview Mrs. Farmer I chose a time when she would not be rushing to answer the questions. I wanted to get answers that were thought out and not just blurted out due to the students coming back in the class in ten or so minutes. I met with Mrs. Farmer to discuss the interview questions a few Wednesdays ago, after softball practice, prior to me arriving she had been working on lesson plans for the next week. In the interview, I learned a lot about how Mrs. Farmer has Common Core she must follow when teaching, how she plans weekly and stays organized, and how students impact …show more content…
Farmer’s planning schedule. On Fridays, she told me she lays out all materials needed for each day and corresponds them with the lesson plans to make sure everything matches well. Mrs. Farmer informed me that staying organized is key when planning lessons and teaching. She said if you do not prepare in advance you risk not having the correct amount of materials needed, or something of that nature. Her lesson planning schedule and matching things up on Fridays are key to her organization in the classroom. Lastly, we discussed students impacting her decisions rather than …show more content…
Farmer told me that students are given choices when deciding what is taught. Instead, I found it odd that parents do not decide anything at all. I say this because I would assume she has or will receive phone calls or emails from parents discussing their child’s academic progress. If a parent recommends something I would just think a teacher would take it into account, but Mrs. Farmer took the opposite look on that. She told me in the interview that she allows students to decide small things such as topics of books, what to write about, and what is done in science class. She does not allow her students to have free for all choices, and she feels she has a good balance with her students. Mrs. Farmer thinks that when parents get involved with decision making and the student becomes aware, they are less likely to put in the effort. Although this is a different approach to the topic, I see where Mrs. Farmer is coming from and I learned that when I get in my own classroom I am going to have to set boundaries with parents and what is being

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 I did my observation of Paul Dunbar Middle School. I arrived at the front desk and was asked by the assistant principal what was my preference of classroom. She then proceeded to take me the section of the school where the ESE classes are held. ESE stands for exceptional student education classes.…

While her main argument is the inequality of those who are less privileged or female. That is to give everyone the same chance to be successful at school and reach their own educational goal. However isn 't there a sense of irony that comes with this idea of making every course a learning active course? She would not turn in lengthy assignments and join in class discussions with such gusto had it not been a requirement for obtaining a better grade. She considers that maybe grades are necessary for the quality of education, as they are a product of the hard work of students. It is not the information they get, but the end result of this education, which fuels their desire to work hard and succeed. At the end, it is a paycheck, a bonus, and a pat on the back or public recognition, which holds precedence over getting information just to quench the thirst of gaining knowledge. The goal of just attending classes for the sake of learning is not enough.…

Each teacher is diverse, with their own concerns and needs. She works very hard to be flexible and cooperative to those desires. For example, she could have a teacher that requests to leave right after school to support their own child's basketball game or so forth. She allows them to go, knowing that they put in a lot of hours anyhow. Thus, supporting the educators and what's essential to them individually.…

We started the first day of this course talking about teacher identity. I do not think my opinion about my identity as a teacher has changed drastically during the semester. I did change some aspects of the way I teach, however I still do not completely identify myself as a teacher. That is because I am a graduate student and I want to be successful as a student, before being successful as a teacher. I enjoy teaching right now, but I think that when being a teacher will be my full time job, then my opinion about my teacher identity will change more.…

Lesson planning is a highly important part of teaching. Lesson plans are a teacher’s guide in his or her class room. They outline the learning goals and objectives for a particular lesson or chapter; they may also include the activity the teacher has planned and the supplies they will need to help the students complete that assignment. During my field placement I have yet to see my cooperating teacher plan out her lessons for the week, but it is clear she has a lesson plan. She usually has a lecture planned out for each day and she uses the textbook to outline the students learning objectives.…
