Reflection: Improving My Writing

Great Essays
When I found out we were getting to do a reflection as part of our final paper in this course, I was excited to be able to reflect on what I feel are some significant strides I have made this semester. After having so many setbacks in high school while trying to improve my writing, I was really determined to figure out where my writing was suffering, and bring it up to par. This semester has been a huge eye-opener not just in improving my writing, but in how to help others improve their writing as much as I feel mine has improved over the past four months. This paper will reflect on my progress of crafting an assertive, unsaturated thesis statement throughout the semester. My first English course in high school was a Pre-AP English course …show more content…
Dr. Lennell, the Pima Community College professor, didn’t believe in writing essays. We had weekly debates, and created new imaginary creatures, while reading Things Fall Apart and Crime and Punishment. Both texts were appropriate for a World Literature class, but when we weren’t assigned any writing assignments to discuss the themes present in either text, my writing regressed further. When the only essay I wrote that school year was a paper for my AP United States history class, I wasn’t able to practice my analytical skills, and so they crawled back further into the depths of my …show more content…
The original thesis statement, “After evaluating several secondary sources, The Virgin Suicide shows us how the “modern fairytale” that the sisters appear to be living in falls apart through negative self-image, controlling parental figures, and a prying public eye,” gives the reader a good idea of what the paper is going to be about (Contextual Analysis-Initial Submission). It is committing to discussing these three specific bits of evidence, and it is fairly specific about what evidence will be discussed. In revising it, I wanted to make it very clear what evidence will be discussed. I believe the revised version, “After evaluating several secondary sources, The Virgin Suicide shows us how the “modern fairytale” that the sisters appear to be living in falls apart through Cecilia’s negative self-image, the sisters’ controlling parental figures, and a prying public eye surrounding the girls on all sides,” helps clarify the pieces of evidence that I will be using to prove that the sisters’ modern fairytale is falling apart. When comparing my final thesis statement of the semester, besides the one in the paper, to my first I can see a significantly substantial improvement in my ability to make assertive, committal thesis statements that fully explain what I am planning to discuss, without using saturated terms. Just looking at my first and final thesis

As a student of the College in the Schools program, the class WRIT 1301 has provided me the opportunity to improve my writing and prepare me more effectively for college. During this semester course I worked with peers to improve not only my own writing, but also improved my analysis of peer works of similar structure. My first paper, a narrative titled Confessions of A Living Sin, was arguably the easiest piece to create, while simultaneously being the most difficult to write. Narrative pieces push writers to write of moments that are strong in emotion, and often times leave the writer vulnerable to whom is reading their work. For me, my vulnerability was discussing the ostracism I faced as a queer and transgender person in a conservative…

A dozen stories were studied in detail with students analyzing everything from figurative language to tone. In conjunction with their study of short fiction, the class also learned about several literary theories, choosing one to apply to a piece of short fiction of their choosing. Frequent AP-style essays were assigned throughout the marking period, some timed and some not; the topics were taken directly from previous AP Literature exams. The students also kept a response journal to document their responses to and analysis of the critical reading assignments; in addition to the assigned reading, each student also selected an additional author to study from a list of commonly referenced authors in the AP exam provided at the beginning of the school year. During the second and third quarters, they will use this additional reading as the basis for a lengthy research paper.…

The first thing I ever wrote for Noah Gordon’s class was a description of a rather mundane object: the fringe around a white-board. Upon looking back at it, I immediately saw how much my writing has matured and changed over the past year of class. In terms of vocabulary, literary phrasing and structure (flow), and grammar; I am leaps and bonds ahead of how I wrote in the earlier part of the year. This being said, I think I have managed to keep my personal flavors in the writing. Here’s an excerpt from the first piece of writing I did, that I believe proves this point pretty well: “Let’s start with a color.…

If a tree fell in the forest and no one heard it, would it still have made a sound? In a way, each essayist faces the conundrum of writing about keenly important, personal subjects that the essayist wants to share. Yet, my learning in Writing 102 demonstrates that content alone does not suffice if clouded in uninspired, obscure verbiage. I have selected three topic essays that demonstrate three of my key personal attributes: my keen interest in equality, equity and intellectual curiosity, and how Writing 102 awakened my dawning awareness on the skills and techniques needed to capture a topic in a meaningful interesting way. Our class emphasis on the key precepts of good writing, effective thesis statements, interesting introductions that…

Throughout the WRIT 1400 course I took in the fall semester of 2016, I was given a number of different rhetorical situations and texts, with the purpose of using numerous writing techniques to break them down. Early on in the school year, Professor Fleming had us write a thesis essay, which took a look at the article My Turn: My Son’s Tattoos and Me. At first it was bit of a struggle to grasp this new writing style, but by looking at examples, I was able understand the point behind a thesis essay. My main goal was to break down the article, and be able to explain the thesis used in the work. This new writing style helped in my ability to break down an individual piece, and withdraw all the important information from it.…

After nearly a semester of writing 101 at the University of Wisconsin-Superior, my writing has evolved throughout a serious of projects contained in this portfolio. These projects have improved my understanding of rhetorical situations and the elements of essays and nonfiction through active and critical reading. They have also required me to show attention to audience, purpose, genre, diction, tone, organization, and other aspects of the rhetorical context. In this reflection, I have included four discourses (a personal discourse, a public discourse, a professional discourse, and an academic discourse): a memoir, an event profile, an informational report, and a textual analysis. I have also included six journal entries from throughout the…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

Since coming to UCCS my writing has changed quite dramatically. When I enrolled at UCCS I was sure that I would not need to complete any additional English courses. Given, I had previously completed a master’s degree with a CLEP credit for English, but that was not the case. The CLEP I had taken previously did not include the essay portion and did not meet UCCS transfer requirements as a result, I would need to take both ENGL 1300 and ENGL 1305. Looking back, this has been a blessing in disguise.…

I took this class because I was looking forward into improving my creativity as a writer and learned more about the different styles of writing. Looking back at the goals I set for myself in the beginning of the class I would gladly say I have some what accomplished them. My goals in the beginning of the class was to improve my writing by becoming more of a show and not tell kind of writer. I also put down that I would like to become more of an open-minded writer.…

Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. Since the beginning of the school year, I feel my overall writing has improved because of my new abilities to construct an arguable and detailed thesis and back it with strong, relevant information, evaluate and integrate sources that I find, and make sure that my writing is void of any grammatical and punctuation errors. I can remember back to the beginning of the year when I was just starting out; my writing skills were ok. As the semester progressed, I noticed the quality of my writing was improving, as each of my new skills was developing. At the beginning of the year, my papers did not even contain a thesis; I just kind of wrote the paper how I felt was right. In addition, I was not very good at finding sources or even incorporating them into my writing; it just was not something I was hugely concerned about.…
