The research packet and article undoubtedly improved my writing for the better. I have done research in the past for other courses; however, I have never done an in-depth research packet and article. I came across some challenges when I first started researching my topic. The first challenge that I came across was finding good sources of information. I overcame this challenge by using an online reference generator. Another great website, I discovered for citation help was OWL Purdue. Additionally, I inquired for help from friends or the librarian if I couldn’t solve the problem by myself. Through my research and writing, I learned that writing and research go hand in hand. For instance, you can’t write about a topic that you don’t have factual information about because that would be ridiculous. However, my goal for the research packet was not right because the objective of the research packet was to ask questions referring to a trend. Thus, I had to go in a different direction for the research article to correctly complete the research article. I adjusted my research topic to, “the decreasing trend of violent crimes.” In summary, if it were not for the research packet, my research article would have been incorrect. I took advantage of paper-rater, a thesaurus, and a list of transition words. In the end though, the feedback provided by Professor Clermont-Ferrand (twice) and eTutoring (three drafts) helped me write a research paper I am proud of. I have included my abstract because, in some ways, it was harder to write than the paper itself. I found it difficult to encapsulate all the information I felt necessary into a single, cohesive…

It may seem like writers research their topic during a long time before writing their stories, but that would not be true. “writers do not research a paper and then sit down to write”(21), writers are a messy complex type of people. Reseach papers are complicated and I did not actually like writing one especially after the amount of procrastination I did. The research in this course however, caused me to, if nothing else, learn of the problems in education and standardized tests. With my first research paper having to be a minimum of 7 pages, with at least five sources, at the very least now know how to research well…
