When hearing the word “mediator” one thinks of a person who eases a conflict between two or more people. In the theological sense, it is viewed slightly different. The term/concept of “mediators” was used by Friedrich Schleiermacher, who is considered the founder of modern theology. The term later was developed further by John Macquarrie who wrote Mediators Between Human and Divine. In this book, according to Maquarrie, mediators have ten distinct qualities to distinguish them from other people.
First and foremost, mediators don’t need to be religious. Although, there is often a theme of mediators having a special relation to God or a Holy Being. Instead of being a religious figure, some mediators were moral teachers like Socrates. He stood to his morals until his death.

The one person that stands out to me as a mediator is Oprah Winfrey. I regard her as a mediator because she brought joys that enriched human life at the deepest level and continues to do so. On her talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, she consoled guests and members in the audience when they had challenges with family, finances, relationships and etcetera. She has a caring, compassionate way about herself that makes people open up and confide in her. She created Oprah’s Angel Network in 1998 which is a charity that helps constructs schools, supply education materials and provides help during disasters. She would give away things like money or houses or cars to each and every person in her talk show audience especially during the holidays. Even after her talk show has long ended, she has been persistent in doing philanthropic work.
