Reflection: Growing Up At Live Oak Elementary School

All It Takes In the 3rd grade, I remember my teacher telling me that reading will be the one thing in your life that you will always enjoy. I really never understood how she could come to that conclusion. I was not the kind of person who cared about reading, nor did I actually take the time to learn about characters and try to relate to them. Every plot was a cliché story involving backstabbing friends or fighting over the same guy. At one point I just sat down in an aisle in shock and disbelief. I mean, it should not be that hard to find a book right? Well it certainly seemed that

In the article, Reading Literature Makes us Smarter and Nicer, by Annie Murphy Paul, it states the two opposing sides or the ongoing debate, Does Reading Literature Make Us Smarter Better People? Annie gives us both sides of the argument, and shows an extensive amount of research to back us her opinion. I believe that reading strengthens your mind, and help you view life in multiple perspectives, allowing me and everyone else to become better individuals. I always read as a kid. I was the small boy who plowed through books day and night, my mom scrambling to and from the library just to keep up with me. In Christine Rosen’s essay, “In the Beginning Was the Word,” she mentions a quote by C.S. Lewis, “We read to know we are not alone” (234). He explains that books are pathways to a better insight on what it means to be human. Although it cannot single-handedly combat loneliness, books are one way to help some people feel less lonely. For example, when people read good fiction, they feel as if they are immersed into the book because it presents a compelling and enjoyable tale.…

I was afraid to sharpen a pencil in second grade. My most vivid elementary school memories spring from instances when I was being reprimanded by an adult for doing something wrong. I did everything in my power to avoid those dreadful moments, but they still presented themselves on occasion. Even now I feel a pit in my stomach when I recall the way I felt during those times, regardless of the fact that almost all of them would easily roll off my back if they occurred today.…
