Individualism Vs Collectivism Analysis

After going through chapter 3, I noticed that there were two important aspects that stood out to me, those two aspects were gender difference and individualism versus collectivism. What has not occurred for some time is that I have the capacity to do things that most females would not be able to do settings. For instance, I did not take into consideration that when I go on my bike rides around 10 pm, I do not worry that if someone is following me or that I could potentially bump into someone that will cause me any forms of trouble. To some degree, I am not certain if this is just natural for me to do, or it applies to most males, seeing that one of stories implies this. Specifically, how females should be cautious when walking to their car …show more content…
However, this is not always the case, considering that I do receive support from my parents when attending at college, and when I will transfer to University level. As well, my parents tell me constantly that they provide support by their own choice, and that they are willing to sacrifice some money to ensure that I have a proper future. As well, it was never stated or implied that ones I acquire my master’s degree in Psychology and Statistics, I should repay back the debt. Instead, I perceive as if I decide whether I will support my parents when they are in a condition when they are no longer able to support themselves, or just to send them at a retirement home. Of course, I am going to support my parents, because I want to show appreciation for all the hard work that they placed on me, and this displays that I do have some parts to collectivism. Yet, most of my decisions have been my own, even if my parents have had their own suggestions. Such as, they recommended for me to major in something that will help me to acquire enough money to secure my future, to consider Universities that will guarantee admission, and not to waste my time on activities that will enhance me. But at the end of the day, they left me to decide what choices I will make today or in the future, whether this will bring shame to my family or not, my parents just want me to be happy with what I decide, and not to regret these decisions in the long-run. Even if my choices will contradict with their own, and this is where the individualism comes into play. Furthermore, I understand that most people are not in the same situation, because they could be making sacrifices to satisfy for their family, not have a strong connection between family members, and to decide if they should look out for themselves, or their whole family members.

Is social stability worth the price of giving up your individualism in exchange for a life filled with nothing, but joy? Is this not what everyone thrives for? In the book Brave New World the society that everyone is accustomed makes sure everyone is happy, has a role and title, and there is no crime nor religion. For a society to become a utopia in my opinion, must have these essentials: a society that everyone can be themselves without any worry, crime is a thing of the past, everyone contributes to society and are equal, and everyone lives a long and fulfilling life. Social stability comes with a price along with everything else, and I say that even though it has its advantages, people, along with myself are not ready to give up their rights and lose their individualism to achieve this so called utopia.…

Religion teaches men that being good is in their self interest because they will be rewarded in the afterlife. By working towards the common good rather than personal gain, people are forced to work together. Men are expected to have an active and aggressive personality while women, however, are expected to be subservient and passive. These expectations shape how society is supposed to be and influence the decisions of individuals.…
