For my Service Learning Project I volunteer at ACTS (Area Christians Together in Service). During the different times I volunteered I was flushed with many different emotions. The ACTS people asked me to work the front check in desk each time I volunteered. There I would hand out clipboards and applications to each person that walked in the door. Once a person was finished filling out the application they would bring it back up to me, and I would make a copy of their license, social security card, and the bill they needed assistance with. At age 11 she started work on a plantation to help earn money for her family, after her father’s sudden death. Working at such a young age prevented her from receiving an education. She feels ashamed for not being able to read or write, which kept her from building friendships because she did not want anyone to know of lack of education.…

“The magic happens when you step outside your comfort zone.” This proverb sums up everything I went through when I recently attended the Air Force Academy’s Summer Seminar in July. While there, I was pushed well beyond my limits. We, the attendees, did strenuous physical training sessions at roughly a mile above sea level, woke up before the sun rose, attended sample classes, and studied tons of military knowledge while learning about the Air Force Academy and the admission process. It was truly a challenge being there, and I loved every minute of it!…

After observing the amount of litter, trash, and dead trees across my local park during my service-learning project, my insight about pollution and the cutting down of trees increased and lead me to have more empathy about the issue I was researching. For my service-learning project I participated in “Clark Park Cleanup”, the purpose of which was to assist in cleaning up Clark Park, planting trees, and promoting the importance of trees and clean parks for our environment. While completing this project I learned many things, some of which being the importance trees have on our environment, and how having clean parks are beneficial for our nation. It helped me understand the issue I was researching more deeply and helped me connect with the issue.
