Reflection For Literature And Psychoanalysis

Improved Essays
When I first entered the classroom for Literature and Psychoanalysis in the topic section, I was extremely excited to learn more about human behavior and why some people act the way they do. Therefore, when my professor assigned us to read Freud’s First Lecture, it caught my eyes immediately. From there, I learned that there are many Freudian terms used when psychoanalyzing an individual. For instance, some that we went over frequently in class discussions included repression, displacement, and wishful impulse. At first, the terms were difficult to comprehend, but as the class went on, it was easier to relate it to the characters we explored in the short stories. Now, I have a basic understanding of different concepts of psychoanalysis. …show more content…
As an example, the rose is a symbol of sexual desires and the destroying of innocence in “A Sick Rose.” Similarly, in “A Country Doctor,” the character Rose is also symbolic of innocence. While in “A Rose for Emily,” it is a symbol of life and death. After learning this, I know how to analyze better which is useful for other classes.
For the writing section of this course, I learned new ways to compose a great essay by using the rhetorical situation. I think I definitely got much better with incorporating the rhetorical situation in my writings thanks to Alyssa and her triangle necklace. I now know that the rhetorical situation is made up of the four main components, which includes the writer, the audience, the purpose, and the context. While using this idea, I know what to add and not to add in my essays. For instance, while writing the research paper, my draft consisted of lots of summarization. Yet, I realized that my audience already read the story, so adding the summary was not needed at all. Therefore, in my final paper, I only included certain important information instead of providing everything that occurred in the

I did not really struggle with this when I wrote my bibliography and exploratory essay because all I had to do was summarize the sources and then incorporate that into my essay. However, it became a difficult task when I had to write my research paper. Many of the sources I found did not have what I wanted since it did not discuss the Freudian concepts. But luckily, I was able to find some quotes in the articles to help strengthen my stance anyway. However, even though I did struggle with some aspects of my writing, I was lucky enough to get help from my professors, peers, and writing center tutors. For instance, the comments written by Josh and Alyssa under my final essays were really helpful because it helps me with what I need to improve on next time. As well, I think my visits to the writing centers were extremely helpful. My favorite visit was the second time I went because of my tutor, Nelson, really tried his best to help me. We reviewed my research paper draft and he told me my mistakes and ways to make it better. For example, he told me to create a chart, which helped me organize my paper and also made me understand what important information I needed to add. He also provided me with a list of transition words and an essay writing format sheet From this experience, I will definitely go to the writing centers for my

The expectations I have about going to a writing tutor is that he or she will help me come up with ideas for my writing assignments, as well as for the drafting and revising aspects of it. He or she will also find flaws in my writing assignments and give me input in order to become a better writer. I envision my writing session as me sitting with my writing tutor going over the instructions for a writing assignment if I have not started yet, or revising my paper if I'm close to finishing it.…

Sigmund Freud’s intra-psychic theory on trauma was developed, from inspiration on his clinical case studies in the late nineteenth century. Freud took on the direction that the repression process is a defence against emotional trauma. The term repression was used to describe painful and emotional events, that are able to be blocked out from an individual’s conscious awareness. This is so that the painful effects of the event would not be experienced and intentionally forgotten (Cohen, 1985). The repression process is an automatic psychological defence.…
