Advantages Of Peer Review: What I Learned In High School

Good Essays
After completing the assignments for this course, the way I approach writing a paper has greatly changed from the methods I learned in high school. I have come to find that writing for a college course requires a person to be more thorough in their preparation to a complete a paper than the approach taken in high school. From the first to third paper there was a noticeable change in my writing style and process. The way I communicate in my papers and the sources I used changed due to trial and error while completing these three major assignments. My idea of peer review was changed as well as I saw how it was structured in this class, and saw the positive affect it had on my paper when properly utilized. In this class I learned to create and …show more content…
During the peer review for the second paper, I fell behind and didn’t have very much completed work to share with the group. For my third paper however, I had a completed draft to have my classmates look over. I believe this made a dramatic difference between the two papers. The advantages of this method are that your paper is seen by many individuals, each with unique insight on how to better your paper. My group members caught grammar and spelling errors in my assignments that I over looked. During the peer review my paper was also critiqued on its transitions and organization. This helped maintain the logical progression and development of ideas through my paper. The disadvantage of this method is that not all advice that I received was correct. Occasionally I received a piece of advice that would have negative affected my paper. I learned it was important to not always assume that your group members know what’s best from your paper. I learned to judge my groups comments before I made changes to my paper based on their …show more content…
This provided me with a variety of sources from an immensely large collection. The online library was used for both my first and second paper. I believe that the knowledge I gained about how to utilize this resource during the first assignment great benefited my work in the second paper. My third paper, although it did not rely on a source from Oakland University’s library, did require that I use skills learned from utilizing the online library. For my third paper I used article found outside of the library database. I used the skills I learned from the first and second assignment to determine if the outside sources I found were usable for my paper. The only difficulty I had with this resource was searching for specific topics. There is such a variety of material available that it sometimes becomes difficult to sort through all the content related to what you’re looking for. I struggled with this during my second paper. It felt nearing impossible to find any resources relating to “communication in the felid of psychology”, without sifting through dozens of articles about “the psychology of communication”.
Through these assignments I learned organization, teamwork and proper communication. The outline format I learned in this class will surely benefit me in writing and rhetoric classes in the future. As well as my new understanding of the peer dynamic when exchanging and editing

Reflective essay Writing was very hard for me. There were many mistakes I made before 211, but now I feel much more comfortable writing my essay and I will be successful in Ewrt 211. Before 211, I was a writer that didn’t understand much about writing and I often made my reader confuse. This semester has been more challenging than I actually anticipated. I have always had some trouble in English, but this semester taught me skills I have never learned before. The main focus I tried to emphasize on is writing as if it was a way of conversation, letting the reader fully understand what I am actually trying to say. During class time, we worked together in small groups which actually helped me grow as a writer and understand my flaws to perfect them in any way I needed too. Included in my portfolio was my first piece of writing “Hold On to the Things You Have” which was the article analysis that I thought was the hardest then there was the research paper titled “Driving to Death” which I really enjoyed writing.…

I had a lot of weaknesses to improve on. One of them was learning not to use contractions in my essays. It was so easy for me to just type "It 's" instead of taking one second to just split up the words and make it " it is". Another weakness I had was MLA citation. I would go back and review notes on how to get my format right and I still would not get it right.…

Going in to GSW 1100, I was unsure of my writing ability. My high school did not focus on writing as much as they did other aspects of English. After my first essay was returned, I had a better idea as to what my strengths and weaknesses were at the college level. I found myself exceling in some aspects of writing, but found myself struggling in others. As Dr. Burroughs would say, “No one is a perfect writer, there is always room for improvement.” I’ve encountered numerous obstacles during this course.…

After taking their comments into consideration, I realized that I might have judged myself too harshly. The paper itself followed all of the criteria, and my simplistic writing style allowed the reader to straightforwardly comprehend the message that I was trying to convey. While it did contain some incoherent sentences such as, “His repetitiveness compels the audience to listen and his extreme exaggerations show the audience that the situation is bad and needs to be fixed immediately,” (Nguyen “King’s Persuasion for Success” 3). I recognized that I did not have an extensive vocabulary; I was not able to efficiently argue my point in a consistent fashion. As I continued this course, I realized that my downfall would be because of my lack of experience and…

After thinking, I decided to take the normal college writing course and learn what native speakers learn. Frankly, I was a little bit concerned at the beginning because I didn 't know the level of proficiency needed and I was afraid I would end up lowering my GPA, however, I insisted on my decision. The first essay we had to write was a bit of challenge for me. I spend hours working on it, I asked for my teacher 's help and I went the writing center…

I had a few misspelled words and incomplete sentences. A lot of my thoughts were mixed up and written in the wrong order. I wanted a certain point to be sent to a audience, instead it looks like I wrote to myself or a friend. This was not my goal with these assignments, but I did learn a lot on what type of writer I am. I also feel like I would be better writing a blog or articles that are opinion based.…

Sometimes, I was sure that my draft was ready to be submitted, but my classmates helped me to find those little mistakes that were still unknown. My only problem with this peer review section was the fact it lead me to use multiple drafts, although I improved to overlook on my mistakes. Before I would never go back or have someone else to reread my papers. So, the writing process helped me to become aware of the benefit of the organization and the revision of the drafts to get a good final essay.
