“Children are not things to be molded, but people to be unfolded.” This is a quote by Jess Lair, a former professor at Montana State University, and is something that has stuck with me for many years now. I’ve volunteered in my church’s nursery for the past six years and I also work as a nanny for three children. Being able to work with young minds and help them discover news things is one of the best feelings for me. As much as I love doing other activities, such as playing piano and guitar, if I had to choose, I would continue working with children.

I am a part of many communities - some larger than others - but my most apparent community would have to be that of my ethnicity. I am Mexican-American and proud of my heritage. It wasn’t always

In my research for the University of Michigan, I found that areas of study include development of personality from infancy to maturity, and how interpersonal factors affect our relationships with others. I look forward to courses such as 307: Directed Experiences with Children and 319: Empowering Families and Communities.

As well as an undergraduate program geared towards my major, I am also interested in the study abroad programs that are offered through The College of Literature, Science. I believe that traveling is one of the best ways to gain knowledge and insight into many different cultures and communities, and will be a great tool to utilize in my Psychology career.

The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is built on the principle that a good, well-rounded education can lead to innovation and transform hearts and minds. This, to me, is especially important, as I believe that education is the gateway to change, and that with the right tools, anyone is capable of discovering their

Growing up, I was homeschooled along with my seven other siblings, so I never really had the classroom experience and community that comes with public school. When I took my first course at Lansing Community College, I realized that I had been missing out on the relationships that are formed throughout the course of a class. Community, friendship, and togetherness were now all things that I looked forward to every day. I loved being surrounded by so many people, and being able to communicate my ideas and thoughts to those around me. With this realization, however, also came the realization that Lansing Community College was not fully meeting my needs in this area. I crave diversity as well as sameness. I want to be able to form relationships with people from different walks of life, and hear about their experiences, and learn from them.

In terms of monetary wealth, my parents have never been the most well-off people, and because of this we’ve had to make a lot of sacrifices to stay afloat. One of those sacrifices included me going to a community college before a university as it was less expensive and I would be paying my own way through college. My first semester at Lansing Community College, I couldn’t drive yet because drivers education was too expensive, so my dad would drop me off on his way to work, and my mom would pick me up after I was done. Looking back,

Cultural and Ethical Aspects: DNP Project Self-reflection Beginning in high school, I became aware of the differences that people made regarding group associations. There were those who were intellectual – competing for valedictorian and salutatorian, musicians – concert and marching bands, technically skilled – agricultural and machine oriented, and then there was me. Most students would only associate with their specific groups; however, I would associate and have friends in a variety of different groups.…

Another year has come and the past and yet again Nevada has made its presence known; but not in the way it wants. Nevada, as keeping in tradition, has for the third year in the row ranked last among all states and Washington DC in education. Now this won 't come as a surprise to many, with the lackluster funding, and scandal that continuously define Nevada 's education system. Yet nevertheless, this isn 't the kind of news Nevadans want to hear. And with the current debate over Core Curriculum, and the several education-related initiatives on this year 's 2016 ballot; the conversation over education has never been so relevant.…

Classroom Communities On the surface classrooms are intended as learning environments, although they are way more than that, a school is also a community of students. Communities are important, because they could affect how students are learning. A particular community is defined by student’s interactions, interactions between staff and students, and the goal of the institution. The men of The Citadel, a military school in the south, and the social hierarchy that exists there are great examples of community in education.…

Throughout someone’s lifespan a person can endure many trials, tests, troubles, and obstacles. I have not come across anyone who has had a perfect life, and being in the human service profession I especially do not expect to ever find someone who has. As a professional in training I understand that I will be able to someday help others through difficult times in their life like finding a new job, arranging childcare for their children, comforting someone who has suffered the loss of a loved one, or a couple seeking help with their relationship. I also understand that I will be put in the situation to help someone who has different beliefs or comes from a different culture than I have. Such as helping a homosexual individual tell his or her…

Growing up in a low income family generated countless struggles financially for me. Money has usually been an easy absence in my family's life, which seriously impacted our living conditions. For the most part my parents always showed support, there was never an odd silence despite the tough moments. Education today, in my opinion, is not doing what it should be doing to ensure that America is actually living up to what it is known for...the land of opportunities. I believe that education should be about an empowering experience that helps students discover their passions, fosters their critical thinking skills, promotes an environment that accepts diversity, and encourages students to apply to skills to the outside world. This should be he purpose of American public schooling because it will help society adapt to changing times and encourage the growth of a well-rounded, modern, and accepting culture which in the long run help foster peace and equality. I am sure that there are many schools in America that try and foster all of things,…

sually, when one belongs to the middle class it’s subjective to the place of inhabitance. In my case I’d say I’ve experienced fifty-shades of middle class inequality. It was recorded that between 1979-2007 the “median family income (in U.S.) rose by 35 percent, while incomes for those at the 99th percentile rose by 278 percent” . Consequently, this extent of economic inequality has applied pressures, set boundaries and limited the opportunities available to me.…

A classroom community has direct influence in a student’s engagement and achievement in these three ways: shows the student the value and meaning behind social interaction and collaboration (Launspach, S., 2008) ♠, trust from the student to the teacher provides willingness to ask questions and seek help (Maele, D. v., & Houtte, M. v., 2011) ♠, help students develop the ability communicate through successful discourse (Birnie, B. F., 2016) ♠. These main ideas satisfy the three definitions of community, a unified body of individuals, society at large, and joint ownership or participation (Greene, K., & Mitcham, K. C., 2012)…

Education in the Past, Present, and it’s Effectiveness Had education stuck where it was in the past, our education system today would look a lot different. Students would still be using Hornbooks, Magic Lanterns (small projectors), and Chalkboards. We would be constantly behaving and listening to the teacher. If students did disobey the teacher, we would get whipped or beaten. However, today’s education is much different and more effective.…
