I came to Hope Orientation in August of 2016, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, fresh off of a summer at SpringHill Camps. My enthusiasm to begin college was matched by over 100 individuals in matching orange t-shirts and I was enthralled. While the other freshman in my group were hesitant to take part in the child-like games, I thrived. Though I didn’t understand the method, I loved the madness: the over-the-top skits, meeting 200 people over the course of one hour, and my favorite, icebreakers. Orientation gave freshman the opportunity to take one last dip into childhood before being slingshotted into adulthood -- and it worked wonders on a group of awkward freshmen. Once my time as a participant was over, I quickly set my eyes on becoming an Orientation Assistant.

In high school, I co-founded a non-profit called ChemoCare that coordinates events to educate children about cancer and creates cloth chemotherapy bag covers that go over the infusion. Through this, I gained the ability to collaborate, delegate responsibilities and develop an independent project. Another part of this project involved communicating with hospitals to plan delivery events, resulting in the distribution of over 1000 chemotherapy bag covers to children with cancer. I am not only dedicated to acting on my passions, but continuing to strive for growth.
Though already an incredible program, I believe Hope College Orientation could grow as well. I have found that my best friendships have come as a result of common deep-rooted passions and service. I believe that if an afternoon of service was incorporated into Orientation, where OA groups served together, the dynamic of the group would change from rigid, scripted conversation to genuine friendship. With this element introduced, Orientation would be nearly complete -- just missing an Assistant Director named
