Reflection Essay: The Secret To Life Is In Art

Improved Essays
On November 18, 2016, I went to the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, where the motto is “The Secret to Life is in Art .” Prior to my visit to the museum, I was already familiar with it due to the fact that, two of my works of art from high school, was shown there. Even though this was true, I still had not actually looked through the museum. Prior to this course, I did not have much of an appreciation or care for art because of how “overrated” it seems today. But with the knowledge and understanding I’ve developed while taking this course, it has helped to open my eyes to just how amazing art is, and how fortunate Hagerstown is to possess such a facility. The museum is very beautiful, and the layout is very creative. I was most impressed …show more content…
The painting is composed using all of the elements of art, with special attention to line, color, and texture. Abstraction art is supposed to be about the act of painting itself, with a nonobjective, universal concept. However, the way that this painting is composed it resembles a human being, most specifically a skeleton. I can clearly see a skull, with a lines shaped like a brain, and a rib cage, that of a human form. This painting makes me think of death or dying not only because of the line and shape, but the colors used, such as red, black, green, and yellow, also can be associated with death. Besides the natural colors used to create the “skeleton”, the painting has a very gloomy, mysterious, and dark feel to it. The sand also can symbolize death because once dead, a person is buried in dirt, which has a similar texture to sand. The sand not only contributes to this theory but it also made the painting pop off of the canvas, sort of like how a zombie would pop up. This is one of the main reasons why this painting caught my …show more content…
I discovered that he has composed many painting and drawings that were compositions of the “walking dead” or sick looking figures. This may be due to the fact that during World War II, Kadish was recruited in the US Army 's Artist Unit, an elite branch funded by Congress to artistically document the war effort. Having to fulfill these duties, it is not a surprise that Kadish would be surrounded by much death and as a result his art showed it. This is what I think he is trying to communicate to the audience. This painting was created in 1948, just three years after the Second World War ended, but of course the war was still very much fresh in everyone’s minds. I think he wants to capture this moment without blatantly coming out and talking about the mass death and many casualties, instead he would rather convey this through art. He knew that the American people was aware that the war was taking place, but maybe they didn’t fully understand how that felt until they saw a work of art like this or similar to this. This painting is very effective in provoking the emotion of sadness and the feel of darkness (Nazi Germany). I also think that he was effective in creating an abstract expressionist work of art because even though it resembles a skeleton, even though abstract art should not resemble anything actual or imagined, you can also tell that he very passionate, which is conveyed more through action rather than

The medium used (oil) allowed the painter to make very realistic shades and colors. The figures and landscape in the painting also looked very fluid and real due to the use of the oil paint. The painting contains the Virgin Mary, the baby Jesus and his second cousin St. John the Baptist. The painting foreshadows the death of Christ on the cross. This point is displayed in the action of the painting where St. John is handing Jesus a small cross and Mary is looking upon it knowing what is to…

This shows how different the screaming person is from others and explains how alone the individual is in the world. The curvatures in the individual screaming in the front describes many emotions at once. One can describe the individual as showing fear, anxiety and shock. Though the picture is not down like a “normal” arti piece, the painting still relays a lot of emotion through unique techniques which shows expressionism. Another example of expressionism is the background.…

The more I looked at it and researched, I realized it had a deeper purpose than just showing abstract shapes and nicely chosen colors. This painting makes me feel like Odili Odita was proud to show everyone the two different worlds he was a part of. I admire the way he used such simple materials to explain something so complex. I also feel a sense of being proud of being African American by combining the two cultures into something so beautiful. This painting gives me a sense of pride and knowing that my history is something special and important and it should be acknowledged as such.…

The action takes place outside the city in front of a large boulder, and there is a church seen in the distance. The mood of the painting is very bleak and dull. The colors used are in earthly tones, and there is a strong overall contrast of dark and light. This dramatic lighting technique can be seen in the central figure. On first inspection of the piece, the piece seems to be made up of lots of lines and blocks of colors creating jagged shapes along with broken lines all pieced together in a collage-like, layered fashion to form the overall appearance of a skull. The color palette used is mainly based on subdued primary tones of red, blues and yellows against the dominate black forming some shapes and lines, and the white of the abandoned canvas showing through. Subject Matter and Interpretation The first impression this artwork gives the viewer is one of…

I have always had a passion for history and storytelling since I was a child and decided in seventh grade world history class that I wanted to be an archaeologist, discovering ancient cultures and uncovering their secrets. I maintained this plan, arriving at Boston University as an archaeology major but after several semesters of study realized that it wasn’t the exact path for me. I began to grow my appreciation of museums, admiring how they could ignite wonder, curiosity, and learning in myself and others. I realized this was where I felt most at home. Therefore, I decided to change my major to art history, while retaining an archaeology minor, and explore history through the lens of artist’s interpretations and ideas.…

According to the text Living with Art by Mark Getlein, there are six primary roles that artists fulfill in society: artists “create places for some human purpose” (i.e. monolithic art as Stonehenge, Gobeki Tepe, churches, etc..), artist “create extra-ordinary versions of ordinary objects” (for instance the World’s largest ball of yarn, or Tintoretto’s Last Supper), artists have been used to “record and commemorate” historical events (such as a wedding photographer or Pablo Picasso’s Guernica depicting the carnage of the civil war of Spain), artists give “tangible form to the unknown” (for instance the abstract and cubist movements of the 20th century, or the design of man-made objects), artists “give tangible form to feelings and ideas” ( works…

    The Scream Poem Analysis

“The Scream” I really like this painting because somehow it involves mystery and insecurity and to my eyes, the rare views in it reflect a sense of how deep the feelings and thoughts of a person can be. In addition, the fact that the composition does not allow viewers to appreciate the face of the screaming person, is what has drawn me to it. Even though it seems to be that it was a lovely afternoon for everyone, it seems that it was not for the scared looking person. Although two boats are seen on the lake and two people walking very pleasingly behind, the scared looking person seems to be astonished and perhaps confused toward something. Hence, looking at this mysterious individual posing his hands on his face with his mouth open has given me the impression that he or she is appreciating something non real that no one else is able to notice; no one but him.…
