The Struggles Of My Writing Class

Superior Essays
Over the course of the last semester and taking English 112 my writing has improved dramatically since my junior year and since taking English 111. In the class we’ve written a total of four essays which all had to be a total of five pages each. In each one of my papers I’ve had things that I needed to improve on to better the next. So as I worked on each paper I tried looking back at the others to see what I needed to improve on and what I can change. There were a lot of different varieties of papers that we had to write in this course. Trying to coop with all the changes was one of the hardest things I had to deal with. We wrote four main papers that were either APA format or MLA format. I struggled mostly with APA format because this was …show more content…
My overall best paper in the course was my argumentative paper; I say it’s my best because I put a lot of hard work into it and was very proud of the result that I got out of doing the paper. The paper was in APA format and had to be five pages with an abstract and a reference page. My topic in this paper was, The Struggles of The American Dream, basically that the American Dream has become so hard to achieve lately that it’s basically a dream people have of doing. Most of my research came from our class book, They Say I Say, which is where we had to get our topic from. One of my many struggles in this paper was trying to keep the correct format and reference things in my paper from the book. I also struggled with comma usage in this paper and had to clean it up for my final draft. My last main struggle was trying to make my argument stronger, at first it was just a statement and really not an argument to the paper. My strength in this paper was my introduction; I did well with setting up the structure of the essay and setting up the theme of the paper. I learned a lot from this paper and was very proud of my overall …show more content…
We had to pick a topic out of the book we had called, They Say I Say; the topic I picked was The Innocence of the Game. I wrote about the innocence in the game of baseball and how cheating has been around for a long time and hasn’t just popped up in the modern day era of the game. I loved this topic and felt strongly about it because I am a baseball player myself so I related will to the topic. The thing I struggled with most in this paper was trying to follow the rubric. My teacher wanted us to focus on the rubric and write our paper in a specific way. I learned a lot while writing this paper, I really wasn’t too sure on how I would do but the outcome was pretty good. The next paper that was written was the Literary Analysis paper. This paper was in MLA format and we had to read the book Hamlet to complete it. We had to basically analyze Hamlet and write a paper on our views of it. My view of the play was that it was a play on revenge. I felt that everyone in the play was trying o get revenge on someone at some point in the play. We had to do a lot of research to back up our point and in the research I did I found that a lot of people felt the same way that I did about the play. My strength in this paper was my way of providing background information about my topic, which helped me lead to my thesis statement. With every paper I did I had some weak points that I needed to focused on.

Dear Professor Edwards, Last semester, I was a student at Colorado State University. I did not take English 121; however, I did take a class like it called Composition 130. My writing has changed; it is easier to write a couple pages and the not be so afraid of writing papers. This is because of the amount I’ve been writing for the class, and how comfortable I was to be able to speak my mind to you. These two pages didn’t faze me. I’ve started not caring so much about what others think about my papers and caring more about how I feel about my papers, as long as I feel like I’ve done a decent job with my paper I feel accomplished enough to turn them in and hope for the best.…

For my rhetorical and visual analysis paper, I chose to write about the visual storytelling of an art school’s ad and how it was weak in its presentation. When I decided to write my thoughts on this topic, I wanted to illustrate my professional opinion on advertising and how important it is to touch on all aspects of rhetoric when working on a visual. I also wanted to include this essay rather than my rhetorical narrative paper because I was much more passionate on the topic of analyzing this advertisement. I had much more to talk about within the analysis and found that I also cared about identifying the flaws within the ad more than I did telling a personal story. All the feedback I was given in class was incredibly helpful, as I was able to pick up on what aspects of rhetoric I was lacking in my final draft.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Even though there is more room for me to learn in future classes, this class has boosted my confidence a great deal. Title Enrolling the EOF program has lighten up a path in life that would have gone completely undiscovered had I walked alone. Along the path was my introduction to college writing, a class that has improved my writing skills profoundly. At first the tasks given to us on the syllabus seemed daunting, almost insurmountable within the five-week period of the program; it seemed even more inconceivable with the class being only twice a week. However, with the guidance and instruction given to me by the professor and peers I was able to strengthen my work as a student.…

Over the course of this semester in my English 1320 class I have seen a drastic change throughout my writing style. Although I still have difficulties with a few writing tasks, I believe that I have improved significantly throughout this course. I have found that with my professor’s guidance along with my own personal editing that my grades have increased. Although it is difficult to not get caught up in simply striving for a letter grade or attaining a 4.0 grade point average, I would like to believe that my main goal was different. Of course I would love to achieve those goals as well, but overall my primary goal throughout this class was to become more relaxed and comfortable in my writings, to use new strategies and proper kinds of conventions, and to truly find a way to express my passion on these papers.…

The papers weren 't too bad to write. I can actually say that I enjoyed writing a few of them because the topic was something that would interest me on any given day. There were three topics that stood out to me: race/ethnicity, deviance and norm, and social class. When I first saw the syllabus, I instantly knew paper four would interest me the most which was on race and ethnicity in America. This was a topic that instantly caught my eye, because…

English Composition I taught me a lot about myself, including how to be a better college student, through the process of writing. At the beginning of the year, I was not very excited about having to write argumentative papers. This is because I did not care enough about the assigned topics to have an opinion. But, I did learn a lot that I would not have known otherwise from having to research information about the topics I chose to write about. For example, in paper #2, I wrote about the niqab and how I believe that it is oppressive to women.…

This English class has been very helpful in my efforts to improve my writing abilities, but has also been very challenging due to there being a different median for every essay. It’s been a heavy work load especially this semester since I decided to enroll in five classes, but in the end it has been very beneficial indeed. I can’t say that writing essays has been one of my strong points but I believe that this course has helped me improve tremendously and it has also made me feel a lot more comfortable with my writing. While in high school I would usually write all of my essays a day before the due date a habit of mine that was very difficult to overcome, but now I have learned from my mistakes.…
