Not including the student who did not take the test, all but one student made significant gains. The students who made significant gains increased their scores from 3 points to 17 points. The one student who did not make significant gains only increased her overall score by one point. I was able to have parent involvement, technology integration, project based learning and small groups. I wish I had one extra day because I would have spent that day on review or continuing our discussion on primary and secondary sources. The day off for the Presidential Election caused me to lose a day on my unit. I think something interesting to add to this lesson would be a novel where we could incorporate a research project once again. This time I chose the Presidents due to the election, but in the future it could be fun to tie in a novel from the Magic Tree House Series and allow them to use primary and secondary sources to research the …show more content…
I think thematic units are great for planning purposes and really allow the teacher to provide activities that build upon the students understanding. I also believe thematic units help tie ideas together and almost help the student make sense of the topic they are learning. I believe the students would have been extremely confused if they were introduced primary and secondary sources completely independent from the thematic unit. I believe the only disadvantage to teaching thematic unit is having enough time to do it successfully. Thematic units can sometimes take a lot of time up, especially if there is plans to pre/post assess the students. Overall, I am so happy I finally had the opportunity to create my own lessons in my thematic unit and truly feel like a
