Reflection Essay: My Volunteer Activities For The Soceity

Improved Essays
For twenty years of my life, I have never done any volunteer activities for the soceity. Although I have donated money to some of the organisations, I have never joined any activities physically. As in the class Social Ethic: Phil 123C we discussed at the beginning of the semester about “you” and “me”, I always think in term of “me” instead of thinking for the soceity. I want all my free time after school is only dedicated for myself, even if I just doing nothing for a whole day. When I take the class Social Ethic: Phil 123C I see an opportunity for me to contribute my work for the soceity where I am living in now because it is also required by Suffolk University before my graduation. At first, there were many options and organisations for …show more content…
One of the options I had was working for St. Francis House which located on Boylston street, and it is very closed to the university. I decided right away that I would volunteer for the St. Francis House.
At first, I have a very little expectation about the job which I would take. I thought that volunteer was the work depend on my generosity and there was no strong commitment between the volunteer and the agency. I even felt a little bit nervous and scared when I had to enter the building, because they had a scan machine at the front door to search for weapons. My friends sometimes told me to be careful when I walked pass the St. Francis House building, because it is very scary with all the homeless people stand around that corner. At this point, after finishing my hours for the social service learning program I can see that my thought was so simple like a child. Doing volunteer is a big different from giving the donation. To ensure a good service and a good working relationship between the volunteer and the St. Francis House there are some agreements for me to know. The first one was that I had to attend their orientation before I could actually

They are people who are struggling with difficulties in life. They need support and help from the other people to get back to the circle of life. I only worked in the clothing program which provides them a very basic need on outfits, but I do know that the St. Francis House also have many other programs in the building to help homeless people with more advance issues. They open classes for homeless people to have certificates in order to apply for jobs. They even have a program which is only for women to help them mentally and physically. Sometimes meeting and working with the people in the St. Francis House was the highlight of the day for me. Besides the drunk man and others difficult situations I have met many wonderful people. They told me jokes about their life, and gave me compliments which gave me a lot of motivation to start a new day at school after that. Some of them even asked for my name so they could asked for my service on their next appointment. They made me feel that I have done my job well on that

For my sixty hours of volunteer work I decided to volunteer at a Child Life Center which was in a poverty stricken area in Norfolk, Va. At the child life center my job as a volunteer was to assist the children with their homework, help the staff monitor the children on local field trips, as well as serve as a positive role model for the children. The experience I had at Park Place Child Life Center was one I will honestly never forget. Although I didn’t get any actual counseling experience, I was able to learn the ways that the non-profit organization received their funding, I was able to gain experience in working with the youth, and I was also able to make a positive impact on the lives of children who were considered “at-risk youth”. To go there every day and be able to see the change the children had in their behaviors and how much just some attention and affection from adults impacted their behaviors was honestly amazing.…

A veteran to me is a patriotic, unselfish, brave, and courageous person, who would sacrifice time from their families to serve and protect our nation. As Jeff Miller once said, “The willingness of America’s Veterans to sacrifice for our country has earned them our lasting gratitude.” Veterans from every country have served throughout many wars. They have put their blood, sweat, and effort into doing the right and beneficial thing for their nation. Being a veteran means not only to serve in the military, but it means to have the selflessness and courage to go off to war to ensure the freedom of the nation.…

I wasn’t sure what I expected when going to my community service for the first time. The place that I choose, the Lincoln Park Community Shelter, resided nearby the Lincoln Park, DePaul campus, so I just thought it would be an easy travel to and from the train station. Walking to the site, it was something that I’m not easily used to at home. Around there, there were clean and beautiful scenery all around. Every block I would walk pass a jogger or a person walking their dog in the peaceful environment.…

Early upon entering the College of Social Work I became interested in the homeless population. In my junior year, I took the time to volunteer with the Renaissance Community Center, an organization that provides various services to Homeless individuals in Tallahassee. Volunteering here taught me about people and the effects of interpersonal communication, how the availability of services can aid people during personal crisis, and the limitations of resources and access on a vulnerable population such as the homeless. This experience is valuable to me as it increased my interest in the population and my awareness of how it intersects with values and the purpose of social work.…

I was fourteen when I first discovered what it meant to be a volunteer; and I utterly despised it. Waking up bright and early Saturday morning to work without pay or compensation was such a bizarre idea to me because I did not understand why volunteers were always so cheerful and happy at early morning hours, when I in contrast, would have much rather been in the comfort of my bed fast asleep. But it did not take me long to succumb to the contagious chipper attitude -I was soon transformed into one of them. One of the people who look forward to community events like Parent’s Place Informational Fair, in which I could help people find the information they need to provide better care for their special needs child, or going down to the county…

I was introduced into the pharmacy setting by being a part of a health science program in high school, and every week I would go to Walgreen’s pharmacy for training to become a certified pharmacy technician. After getting used to the college environment, I decided to volunteer at St. Joseph’s Pharmacy during my second semester of my freshmen year. The time that I spent at St. Joseph’s pharmacy helped me find my interests and skills in this profession and has motivated me to become a dependable pharmacist that patients can trust. The pharmacists at St. Joseph Pharmacy are really passionate about what they do, and I can tell that they truly enjoy interacting with every patient.…

Week without walls" Two years ago, no one would have imagined the transformation in my personality; from a timid and introvert teenager to an active young man striving to contribute to my community. My story started in tenth grade, when the school counselor recommended that I participate in the schools extended volunteer program under the "week without walls" initiative. The program, in hour school, was originally designed to provide the students with an opportunity to engage in experiential learning and participate in activity based programs. However, later on it evolved into an opportunity for willing students to focus on volunteer work.…

Volunteering at The Salvation Army I realized this was my chance to make a difference. When people hear that a person is “homeless,” I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind is a bum, dirty clothes, a drug addict, and a drunk. However, that is not the case at all. Living in times like these, recession plays a huge role on unemployment rates which eventually leads to homelessness. Not only that but natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy, left thousands of people homeless in New York.…

Anytime we perform a service for a community, we hope that it provides the best outcomes for people and that the community actually wants our “help.” Volunteers need to follow the ideals of the community perspective: mutuality, reciprocity, humility, respect, and sustainability in order to understand the community’s needs and prevent unnecessary harm. If communication is clear and consistent, then the community should prosper from the service being done. If the service is international, students should research some of the current issues in that country since they are not as familiar with the cultural aspects. For example, if the community needs a well and asks for it, then that is what the volunteers should provide not a schoolhouse.…
