In a Blink of an Eye Do you want to know what it’s like to see improvement over a short period of time and how it makes one feel? I came into Comm a proficient writer due to the English teacher from my high school, I never knew I’d come out of Comm an even better writer. Improvement can always be made and that evident in my reflection of this semester in Comm 1015. Improvement doesn’t happen overnight, it happens over a period of time. As the first semester comes to a close I want to discuss how I have improved and bettered my writing ability though hard work and extra attention to my issue areas and how proud I am of my work. I came into college a novice writer. My first assignment with Ms. Shinault was the introduction letter and it’s the first one I’d like to highlight it as one of my starred assignments. This assignment set the tone for how I perceived of my teachers grading, I was expecting a …show more content…
In my common book essay I noticed some great improvements in my writing. I am proud of how I received an 86% on the longest and to me the most difficult assignment. I was worried when I was writing this assignment that I’d be too long or too short, but before proofreading I was at three and half pages exactly. Improving makes me proud of myself, for in the common book essay I didn’t receive any marks for run-on sentences. Compared to the introduction letter, I eliminated my run-on sentences and also decreased the number of comma issues I had within my writing. I also received many other comments I hadn’t received on my other assignments, like “good story” and “good communication to readers.” I was very proud when I saw these comments for my extra time and energy was paying off and helping me to improve my writing. Another reason I am proud of this assignment, was the ability to talk about my scouting life and how scouting has impacted me. As the semester went on I only improved more and more, evident in my next starred

During my junior year at Stephen Decatur High School, I was enrolled in American Literature with Mrs. Moore. At first I thought she was a hard teacher because she made us write a lot. I enjoyed writing creative pieces, but in her class she gave us a prompt or we had to analyze a text and prove how the author believed in the American Dream or not. The first essay we wrote I scored a 29 out of 30 and was proud of myself because English has not always been my strongest subject. Our next assignment was on The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.…

Thanks to our experience in composing outlines, my writing is better organized and more concise.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

The very first week of class we were given the prompt for the Dear Instructor Letter, and boy did that first assignment open my eyes and change my approach and opinion, very quickly. This assignment gave my peers and me the opportunity to share with you, our biggest concerns about taking this class. I was hesitant because I knew my writing skills had never been very “scholarly”, plus it had been near a…

The main reason for this grade is a lack of any major improvement in writing. Although I had some improvements in writing (vocabulary, syntax, and tone), and developed a more complex style, there was not much improvement in the quality of writing this year from writing last year. I plan on not repeating my mistakes for next year’s English. Finally, I will talk about my main goals that I have completed and will complete.…

Based on my prior experience in honors english for two years, AP English Language and Composition, and AP Literature, English 101 honors is the best fit for my experience and my level of meticulous and strategic writing at this point. Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

Throughout this semester of English 101, writing has become more of a skill than a struggle. Writing was a challenge that I dreaded when I chose to be in the course, nonetheless with time, I learned from my mistakes and was able to improve. This course made me very doubtful on whether I could be capable of even writing a paper that would provide me with a decent grade, but at the same time made me push myself in my writing technique. In the end, I can reflect that I learned from my mistakes and wrote papers that took time and dedication to accomplish. I learned from this class to be confident in my writing and make all the mistakes to receive the grade I want in the end.…
