Reflection: Clinical Annotation

This week’s bible passage made me reflect on my clinical rotation at the clinic while shadowing a nurse who was doing an anatomical procedure to an offender who accidentally fell and injured his head. Anatomical is the procedure that any nurse will do before they will assign any offender to segregated or isolated locked rooms or to any offender who needs to be assessed after an event that resulted in an injury. There was a bruising and a “bump” on the back side of the offenders head due to his bad fall. The swollen “bump” measured 3.4 cm. in width by 4cm in length. It was red. The offender was asking for ibuprofen for pain, but the nurse declined his request. He requested an aspirin, but the nurse still refused to administer any pain medication. The nurse answered “I think you will be fine.” The offender did not directly show any gestures of disagreement with the nurse, but he left disappointed and still in pain. The next day was her day off. I did not get the chance to shadow her once again. She is always in my prayers ever since. I am hoping that she will find the spark in her nursing vocation once again, so that she can introduce Christ to any offenders in that facility through her compassionate nursing care. I feel I should…
I feel I should advocate at all times. I admit I was torn between establishing a decent rapport for my school to the facility for the next person, and to be not conceptualized as an intruder to their perceived harmonious workplace. I feel I should have stepped in when the nurse refused to administer the client’s requested pain medication. It is just hard to assess the situation when the person involved is someone you assumed to do the right thing since you both came from the same school.
Conclusion
This week’s clinical was slightly rough for me because I witnessed a nursing practice
