This was a very relaxed meeting, we were able to eat and ask questions while hearing about the various aspects of working at BlackRock. One thing I noticed at BlackRock more than any other place we visited was the dress code. Other than Ken Wilson, I think I saw one of two people wearing a suit or even nice dress clothes while we were there. This was one of the things that many of their employees said in their presentations. Another thing that stuck out more so at BlackRock than anywhere else was that the employees from different departments really seemed to know one another. This surprised me because I knew they were the largest asset management company in the world, employing over 4,500 in their New York office alone.
Next on our agenda was Blackstone, where Will Cronk, another student on the trip, had an internship this last summer and will be starting full time this June after he graduates from MSU. They all told us about their journey through a number of different jobs within Blackstone or other firms that ultimately ended with them being where they were at that time. Most of the people we met had moved from one department to another within Blackstone. It seemed like a nice place to work since you could go in knowing you weren’t locked into one position or even area of focus. Blackstone seemed very supportive of their employees trying a new position in a different department and of those wanting to expand their knowledge by going back to school. One of the women we met with was just about to go back to Graduate School to earn her MBA and the other employee who met with us had no intention of going that route. We were able to hear why the two women were deciding to go in such different directions while in the same company and it was very insightful to hear
