A Quinceanera is a Hispanic traditional celebration that celebrates a girl's 15th birthday. I was quite shocked when I got the invitation. I knew if I said yes to this, I would be going far beyond my comfort zone. I barely knew any Spanish and I did not know the majority of the people on the court. Although, I was eager to see what this had in store for me. However, little did I know, no matter what the occasion is, there is always something unexpected. My friend from grade school, Alexa, invited me to be on the ladies court. Even though I was an experienced …show more content…
Our choreographer did not seem to care because his main goal was to make sure everything was perfect. By the end of the night, we were all very tired, but ready to kill it.
The next morning feeling anxious and excited, I put on my glittery dress for the Mass. The service was beautiful, but I could not understand a single word because it was all in Spanish. However, I still had an exceptional time. When the service was over, we went into the limo, which was filled with drinks and loud music.

Unfortunately, that is all we got to see since they would not let us in so we waited in the lobby for roughly two hours! Our choreographer came with our outfits to change into before we performed. Shortly after that, we saw guests being let in so we tried again. Luckily, they let the ladies court into the large room, but not Alexa or the gentleman court. I quickly grabbed a seat and was soon mesmerized by the bright, flickering lights flashing with colors such as pink, blue, and yellow. The elegant room, filled with dozens of people, was lined with trays of food. As my eyes followed the dazzling decor, I noticed that the stage was backward than what we practiced the night before. I searched for some of my other dancers and we all confronted our

Marlén Mendoza Quinceañera I can still remember the limo, the photo shoots, the cake and that magnificent ice sculpture at the center of my dessert table. That day the venue was filled with over three hundred attendees from family to friends to even strangers but none of it mattered because on June 6, 2008, I became a Quinceañera. To many of my non-Latino friends this description of my party might sound like a wedding but it is not, on the contrary it is a rite of passage. Although now more extravagant it still holds true to its roots, practices like the coronation, toast, changing of the shoes, and white attire are all symbols vital to the demonstration of coming of age for a Latina turning fifteen. Latin American culture regards a “Quinceañera” as an adolescent girl’s entrance into womanhood at the tender age of 15 (“quince años” meaning 15 years of age/15 years old). Traditionally, this coming-of-age celebration was intended “to introduce girls to society and signify they were ready for marriage” (Quinceañera: Coming of age in a bad economy by Nancy Lofholm of The Denver Post). No one in the group was singing just yet but playing a music that was not too loud but very jubilant. The group had matching outfits, in which they were all dressed in white with silver galas on the side of their pants and jackets. As everyone was getting their food, the mariachi continued playing, but a bit louder. After a while, the quincenera went to the middle of the hall and sat down on a chair while the mariachi played music for her in honor of her birthday.…

I would always tell myself, “it's barely a year away”. And before I knew it that year away turned into six months away and then a couple weeks. To give you a little background, in some families (not all), Quinceañeras are treated like a wedding, besides the obvious fact that there’s no husband. A Quinceañera consists of inviting almost everyone you know, hiring a band to play live music, a photographer, a videographer, catering, lots of liquor, a Catholic church ceremony, and hiring a dance instructor to teach the girl and her five friends/family to dance a mix of songs to present for the big day.…
