Reflection About My Writing Style

Journal 4-
The weaknesses around my writing style that come to mind have to do with using active voice and passive voice. I find myself reading sentences over and over rechecking and rewording to make sure I am using the correct context. Most of the writing I do seems to be in the passive voice. However, there are time that the active voice should be used and can be more effective to the audience or recipients’. In many cases by just putting the subject first makes the sentence in active voice.
Strengths of my writing, for most of my work, are the details and flow of my style. As I have found with this course, writing can be very complex. I do feel that my weak areas have strengthened and my strong areas have developed over the past

When it comes to producing academic papers my writing style remains adaptive to meet the rhetorical context of a specific course. Meaning, my focus and attention is directed towards proper formatting, and writing a paper that engages a reader. My process involves narrowing in on a topic, gathering sources, free style writing, creating an outline, writing a draft, revisions, and then producing a final…

Throughout my writing career I have learned many different techniques to writing a perfect essay. I have many strengths, but I believe I possess more weaknesses. My strengths are citing sources, emphasizing words, putting commas. I possess more weaknesses as shown above; there is always room for improvement. Even though I'm in a college leveled class I know I'm still not at that level.…

After reading your response I realized I was not completely clear on my point of view. I have notice this before and am working on being more clear when writing but also have a balance on not over explaining that can lead me to run off topic. This is not ease for me to do but when I receive feedback from people truly telling me their opinion and not just I agreeing it helps me correct my writing style. So thank you once more for truly critiquing me and taking the time to read my journal.…

The differences between the style of writing that I do to friends and family and the style of writing to instructors are quite distinct. When writing to family and friends, it’s much more informal and not nearly as structured as it would be if I were to write to instructors. It would be similar to how I would talk to them in person and I would use words that would be deemed informal to more professional type people. When I ever do have to write to professionals such as instructors, it would be structured as if I was writing a report or an essay. Being formal when writing to people such as instructors or supervisors is necessary to seem more professional yourself.…

Over the last four essays, my ability to write has improved exponentially from the beginning of the year. Through the four essays I have learned valuable skills that will be the support for future essays. On the two beginning essays my ability to use vocabulary and other valuable skills was improving. By being supplied by information from the instructor, and fellow classmates I was able to spot my weaknesses in my writing and improve where improvement was needed. As the semester progress each essay improved upon the last as self reflection and reflection from others was used wisely.…

I think that paraphrasing will be the hardest for me to avoid while writing. It seems that sometimes it is hard to write or summarize something that is so well written already. The way I will work around that is to stop and re-read what I am wanting to summarize, take a few important words out of the material I am reviewing and jot those down, then go back and write what is needed to complete my sentence or idea. Once I have completed my writing, I will review and make sure I have properly cited my work. Using the guidelines discussed in our “Read Section”, and following the instructions listed on how to source correctly should avoid paraphrasing mistakes and plagiarism.…

Have You Developed a System of Writing That Works Most of The Time I really have not looked up different styles of writing let alone realized there was so many different types of it. My method is not necessarily a method per se, I have always for the longest time just wrote down as if I was speaking to someone. That to me was where my biggest praise came from, that I was able to write with such voice and was able to emulate my presence through the pages. When writing for an essay there is a period where I read and reread the question to gather all the information that is needed. Once the question is fully understood, I try to explain myself in full detail.…

I spend so much time worrying about the transitions within my body paragraphs that I tend to forget about the unnecessary, additional, or redundant phrases. For example, in Writing Project 1, I said in the third body paragraph: “The surrounding design around the article is unskillful.” The “surrounding” and “around” words used in the same sentence created a redundancy that didn’t flow as smoothly as it could have with just one of these words. Word choice is another weakness that is seen in my essays, since I do not use strong vocabulary words and sometimes write sentences with vague pronouns rather than specifying with the subject that I address in the body paragraph sentences. A smaller weakness that I have with writing essays is the minor error of not formatting citations correctly in MLA, but instead having part of the source in APA.…

Well, I consider myself to be a decent writer, even though writing is not my strong point. Therefore, as I have come to the completion of my degree, I have learned numerous writing skills along the way. I learned the MLA style, when I started taking my basics in college and the APA style for my upper division courses. At times I get confused on the formats as I consider them to be similar in some ways. Furthermore, they differ and each has its own different style of quoting and citation in articles, books, phrases, etc.…

What are some writing strategies I have incorporated into my writing style? Until this year I have never used a specific way of writing, I have always just written down what comes to my mind and then edited it to make it sound better. One of the very first memories I had as a child was lying in bed at night and listening to my mom read stories to me. I would always have my pajamas lying in my bunk bed in my blue paint colored room. Every night before bed I would curl up next to her in bed and pick several books for her to read. As I got older, I would pick bigger, harder, and longer books to read.…

Through my experiences with writing essays in high school, I have noticed a few strengths and weaknesses with my writing. My main strength is the structure of my writing. I know what to say when I need to so I don’t tend to ramble on to tangents. Another strength I have is writing about topics that I love because I can just spill all my thoughts out onto paper and never have to worry about having enough sentences.…

Knowing I had to aim for a different audience this time around really affected my writing. When my tone for the original paper was rather informal and even somewhat fun, now I had to write for the APA, a group of people who take this line of work very seriously (as they should). Due to this, I gave my arguments a more serious tone, and I even expanded my vocabulary a bit to give a good impression. If I want the APA to listen to me, I should write in a tone they would use. I was careful about the sources I used for this.…

These areas are: a professional tone/voice, building upon an idea, and commenting on quotes and excerpts. I, personally, can be professional if there is a need to, but it does not happen often. My vocabulary helps, but I write the way I speak: using a familiar, everyday tone. Building upon an idea or previously mentioned ideas is also an adversity. This is a major problem because my paragraphs always seem smaller and can never smoothly reach the point I am attempting to make.…

When I began this English course I was not the writer I am today. I wrote with several errors. I always thought I was an okay writer, but I did not realize I was not good enough to get the grades I wanted in college. I feel like I can say my writing has improved because of this class. For one I now know how to correctly do MLA format.…
