Personal Narrative: My Practicum Situation

Improved Essays
My practicum situation is different from a typical general-education classroom, therefore my cooperating teacher, Mr. Callahan, had to provide special explanation and instruction about his fifth grade self contained classroom. He told me that his fifth graders are academically at a second grade level. As for my role in his classroom, he explained to me that I should expect to be put to work over the next few weeks of practicum. This included working individually with his eight students, as well as delivering a lesson by the end of this experience, which made me nervous but also excited.
My first impression of the classroom was that is was quite large and spacious, especially for a class of only eight students. Around the classroom, Mr. Callahan had books displayed of different genres from picture books to young adult. The first language arts lesson that I observed was relaxed in the sense that for most of the time they did a craft. Mr. Callahan explained to me that this will not be the typical literacy lesson, today was

Fifth grade is one of the grades that I would prefer to teach and this will be a great opportunity to examine a working fifth grade class. My time in Mr. Callahan’s classroom will either reinforce that I want to teach fifth grade or it will help me realize that I need to reconsider which grades I would want to teach. Working with his self-contained classroom may also open my mind to the idea of working with special education or urban education students. I work with fifth graders at my current job at my local YMCA but I am expecting practicum to be a much different experience being that this takes place in a professional school environment. I am also excited to approach this with a literacy perspective and apply my knowledge from class to what I will observe and work with in the classroom. All in all, the next few weeks will definitely help build my skills as a teaching

When they were in a different classroom learning English, their peers were learning more, which is making the gap bigger between both groups of students. Reading about Mrs. Zajac classroom and students, you quickly saw how easily frustrated the students were getting by not understanding what was going on.…

Last semester was definitely the hardest for me. I have two challenging research papers toward the end of the semester. I find it hard because I did not know what to write about and which assignments I should start on first. I manage to overcome this challenge by narrowing the topics and start on the paper that was closest to deadline. My stress level was at 10 because I skip meals and stayed up all night long to finish my papers.…

Mrs. Earp and Mrs. Clay’s classrooms were well organized for the most part and were both nicely decorated, providing students with a positive learning environment. Both teachers maintained control of the classroom, however, Mrs. Clay did this while keeping a positive attitude and Mrs. Earp tended to raise her voice and single out students. However, there were several teaching methods I admired from both teachers. Mrs. Earp promoted classroom participation by handing out stickers to students engaging in the activity, causing other students to participate as well. Mrs. Clay encouraged students to work on their assignments by providing an incentive that upon completion, students were allowed to play on their computers.…

Practice Journey: For our practice journey, we completed 6 hours of various activities to help prepare us for our qualifying journey. We began with kayaking around Rheault Bay by our cottages on Turnbull Island. While we were out on the kayaks, we also practiced kayak emergency procedures like the “T-Boat” rescue. Back on land, we practiced campsite activities like building a fire, setting up a tent and campsite cooking. We then brainstormed items we need and created group and personal equipment lists (shown below.)…

Mid-September, we started working in the preschool classrooms.…

Walking into Ms. Vanneman’s first grade class on the first day of my observation, I expected first grade to be an extension of kindergarten. I thought that first grade was the transitional period before real learning took place. I expected the students to still be learning about shape, size, color, the alphabet, and proper classroom etiquette. I was quickly proven wrong and my expectations were blown. This first grade class was reading, spelling, solving math problems from memory, writing paragraphs, and for the most part was really well behaved.…

Being able to go out and observe in a classroom is something that makes me so excited to be a teacher in the future. I was able to observe a classroom and learn many techniques to encourage learning. On October 11 I went to Discovery Elementary School to observe in Mrs. Hibma’s classroom. This was a 3rd grade classroom, and this interested me because I would love to teach 3rd grade. There were 27 students in the classroom, which I found to be a large classroom.…
