My practicum experience at BMC has been very enjoyable and informative. I love what I do and the impact we are making on the lives of special needs children. The semester started of pretty rocky when I couldn’t find a site to work at due to poor communication from all the people I had initially emailed. I got pretty lucky with this site because a person I had emailed, who no longer worked at BMC, forwarded my contact info to the pediatric department at BMC. From there, Ivys and Dr. Adolphe called me in for an interview. After that whole process, …show more content…
So, they assigned additional task on top of the day to day stuff I was already doing. Usually, these new tasks were appropriate for my skills. For instance, one of the additional tasks I had to do was create promotional material for the EASE clinic. This included posters, flyers, and other material we could give to pediatricians and families so they knew exactly what the EASE clinic does. The flyer for the physicians had more information because we really wanted everyone at BMC to know about the clinic and to refer children they felt were not getting the help they need in terms of education.
I know in the future we want to conduct a research study based on the clinic so my supervisors assigned me to learn how to effectively use qualtrics. So, in addition to working at EASE clinic, from time to time I shadow a team that is working on another research study that is solely based on qualtrics and surveys so I can lead our research study next semester.
Overall, working at the EASE clinic was amazing because it showed me a different aspect of the hospital setting. It illustrated a lot of the behind the scenes that goes on to provide care to patients. I think this is very helpful for me because I strive to be a very well-rounded medical student so learning these things early on is very beneficial and if I wanted to start a clinic or program for certain disparities I see as a physician I know exactly how and who to contact for
