Personal Narrative: My Bar Mitzvah

My Bar Mitzvah was on October 13, 2012, at Germantown Jewish Centre. In the months leading up to the special day, the only thing that I focused on was making sure I was ready to lead the various parts of the service on that Saturday morning: the Shacharit blessings, the Torah service, my D’var Torah, etc. While I may have been fully prepared to chant all of the blessings and lead all of the songs, it did not really phase me at the time that simply standing up there and being easily seen by the congregation would be a task in and of itself. Not that it was a major burden in the end, but I needed a stool to stand on in order to be comfortably above the height of the podium table in the front of the sanctuary. I couldn’t really tell you if anyone in the congregation knew about the stool behind the podium, but I hoped to God that it was a secret between my family, the Rabbi, and the janitor who provided the stool. I could easily say that my height was a slight hindrance during my Bar Mitzvah, but why would I? I thought …show more content…
Today, it would be difficult to imagine who I would be without swimming; it has become such a major aspect of who I am. Even though I may have always been at a slight disadvantage because my arm span and leg length are smaller than that of my competition, I feel that I have established myself in the sport of swimming. It is a passion of mine that I have built up over years and years of dedication. I never have and never will let my height difference turn me away from the sport. It’s easy to quit something for reasons beyond one’s control, but in swimming, I have been able to improve my strength and mental capacity so that I can make up for the lost distance attributed to my height. So what if my 6’ 5” competition swims a 200 free with a 25-second split — I am still able to compete and rise up to his level in ways beyond physical

“If I were Shannon Miller this would not happen,” I often thought as I positioned my body onto the bar. I hated heights and even being a few feet in the air on the highest uneven bar unsettled me. It seemed as if I were on the peak of a mountain top and my oxygen supply was thinning out. Each exhale made me dizzier and before you know it, I would be climbing down in a hurry, anxious to see my score even though I knew it would be low. I hated the fear I felt about practicing on the bars and how I believed that I would end up like my older teammate Chanel, who recently had surgery on both of her knees due to an awful fall in the last competition.…

Wow I remember this day like it's was just yesterday. I was so scared and nervous that I was going to mess up on the big day, my Bar Mitzvah was on a Saturday morning all eyes on me as I did all of my prayers. I could remember the days before that my parents and religious leaders would always say practice over and over again I kept hearing it in my brain that day. I knew that I could not prove them wrong and do my best I can. I remember my dad always say “jake let me hear you practice before you go outside”…

My boyfriend of three years broke up with me; my heart was shattered like a mirror on the ground, cracked and pieces missing. I never thought that this would affect me so much. I couldn’t let everyone see how upset I was, so I hid my emotions behind a fake smile that no one ever knew existed. That is where all my problems started; something started to grow inside of me like an embryo of a new unborn child. Slowly but surely I sank into a dark abyss of depression.…

A Bar Mitzvah is the religious initiation ceremony of a Jewish boy who has reached the age of 13 and is regarded as ready to observe religious precepts and eligible to take part in public worship. When I was eleven years old I began my road to adulthood. The first obstacle I had to overcome was learning Hebrew. It was very difficult at the beginning because there were barely if any at all, similarities to Russian or English, which I spoke fluently at the time. It was like looking a sheet of paper with scribbles on it, it just didn’t make sense.…

I was never the fastest competitor on the team, never the one with the lofty goal of achieving an Olympic medal, or compete at the international level. I wasn’t a natural by any means, but I knew how to work hard, and when I put in the effort and I could get results. I was in the upper quarter of finishers and finalists, winning some events, losing others. I was happy, and had fun competing in the sport, reveling my recently discovered realization – as long as I continued to work hard and dedicate myself to the sport, I could do well. I trained and…

The aforementioned training regime was a necessary price to pay if I ever hoped to improve and outperform peers, and I stayed dedicated to it from the beginning. Because of this, I grew accustomed to the ring of the victory bell and the satisfying validation that came from it. However, after many years of relentless training and competition, what has taught me most is not the split-second touch of victory, but the long stretch of perpetual failure. At the age of sixteen my athletic improvement became halted without explanation in a sport in which the sole purpose is to outperform the athlete you had been in the race before.…

In 2008, my mom took me to my older sister Hannah’s swim tryout. I was standing around on the deck, waiting for her to finish, when a man named Joe Cabel walked up to me and told me that I should try out, because my lengthy legs would make me fast. Cabel has been known to stretch the truth a little bit, and 8 1/2 years later, I’m not much faster. But I’ve definitely learned a lot of things, mostly from my high school seasons. Freshman year, I learned to follow and respect the seniors, and as I progressed into my senior year, I’ve learned to earn the respect of the underclassmen, and to lead.…

The sport of swimming has taught me that I am not going to be able to win every competition and make a personal record every time I compete. From coming to the harsh reality and realization that most of the time I will not reach my audacious goals, I learned to focus on working hard and making small personal victories on a daily basis. In swimming the season consists of about a dozen small competitions that eventually lead up to the championship meet. The championship meet is when fastest swimmers peak and all compete against each other.…
