Personal Essay: A Career In Medicine

Curiosity has been something that has always struck me as being closely tied to a career in medicine. My grandfather was a general practice physician who I witnessed growing old and weakening as the days passed. As a child he always enjoyed showing me many things he has learned from his medical practice and hobbies that he did on the side when he was not on the clock. I relished his company and looked forward to visiting him every time I had the chance to. Later as his health started to decline, it was tough for me to see someone so close to me being rushed to the hospital time after time with a heart attack and significant strokes. Each time I saw my grandfather endure these hardships and slowly slip out of the grasp of my hands and all I …show more content…
I have chose to pursue my under graduate career as a biomedical science major with the intent of becoming a medical professional in order to help those like my grandfathers and many others strive, and live an easier and tolerable life regardless of their age and medical set backs. Its not just curing the sick and injured it is also teaching them about preventive actions and ways to maintain good health as their lives pursue. I believe there is nothing more important than someone knowing about their bodies and learning the limitations that it can withstand. A person’s body travels with their mind and goes wherever they do, so it should be the most important thing that they should be taking care …show more content…
During my teens I discovered a passion for weight lifting and conditioning. This has improved my health and I enjoy sharing and encouraging my friends and family to start living a healthier lifestyle as I do. Living healthy has improved my energy and mind, which makes me feel less exhausted or drained than I used to when I had unhealthy habits. I am always trying to balance the amount of food I intake everyday which is why I have recently begun counting my calories, protein, and fats that I intake with every meal. I hope to one day incorporate and teach my future patients about ways to improve and increase their overall health and wellbeing as they continue their

Most little girls dream of being a ballerina when they grow up, I was the little girl who dreamed of medical school. Anyone who was brave enough to ask got my vehement no when asked if I thought that the college, subsequent medical school, and training would be too much school or that I would get bored. I decided very early that to be a doctor was one of the most exciting things that a person could chose to be and my fantastic pediatrician was the initial spark for this love of medicine. The care that I could see him exhibit in his daily operations as well as the ease at which he interacted with patients and parents alike inspired me. His knowledge was fascinating and I longed to have that level of understanding of the human body.…

The study of medicine has evolved over thousands of years from something of an enigma governed by religious spheres to the highly specialized science of preventing, treating, and curing diseases of the human body. While my interest in becoming a physician did begin with a love of natural sciences, it has, like the study of medicine, evolved into something much larger than topics covered in my general biology courses. I want to work with people on managing their conditions, learn from doctors before me as well as patients, and be a positive influence despite often-negative diagnoses. Individuals all have different reasons for wanting to attend medical school, but I believe that we are either called to practice medicine or we are not. I am drawn…

I’ve been addicted to learning from the start. While all aspects of learning are in some way beneficial, the connection between health science and me has been engraved in my heart. By being in high school, I felt I was limited in the opportunities to dwell in health care. However, I’ve proved my suspicions wrong by delegating myself to creative ways in outreaching to the medical path. I’ve attended medical seminars, shadowed, volunteered, researched and challenged myself to understand people better in ways like attending cultural events that could potentially help me in the future to become a competent healthcare provider.…

What I discovered, in time, was that helping others is not just a fulfilling purpose, but a moral responsibility. Indeed, medicine is the most appropriate career path for me, the one best suited to me intellectually, emotionally, and otherwise. In my high school years, I worked at my local medical center, rotating among different departments including emergency, physical therapy, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and radiology. Just as I sold popcorn for Boy Scouts and had to learn to deal with the public, within the office I also had to be diplomatic.…

World renowned author Paulo Coelho once said, “The world is changed by your example, not your opinion”. Like Coelho stated, it’s not out of the ordinary for people to want to infuse their lives with meaning — to try to somehow leave the world a better place than they found it. It is human nature to want to create some sort of legacy—to not just do good deeds, but also know that they truly made a difference. What better legacy is there than dedicating your life to save those of others? The career of a doctor is one that can leave such a legacy, and it will leave a certainly admirable one — helping patients deal with and overcome devastating illness, making challenging diagnoses, and comforting families after the loss of a loved one – these are…
