Narrative Essay About Courage

“Courage is the most important of all the virtues because without courage, you can't practice any other virtue consistently” (Angelou). As a kid, I didn’t have the courage I needed to see the most important aspect of life, I spent most of my time trying to fit in amongst my peers, with my family, and in my education. However, this essay isn’t about the struggles of being a part of the pack, it’s about the courage to stand out and set out in your own direction. This wasn’t a task for the weak-hearted, this was a journey that weathered my personable attitude and robbed me of my benevolence, it built walls and segregated me from the people I cared for the most. I was done being a Caregiver and decided to go into Massage Therapy. My parents found this to be irrational; I already had one degree that would provide for me for the rest of my life, I was only going to accrue more student debt by going back to school and they really didn’t want their daughter taking part in an industry that was looked down on as inappropriate; even though, once I graduated I would go on to work in a highly reputable spa and make as much money as my father had per hour; when my parents saw this they finally decided I had made the right decision. Consequently, this is where I started to veer off in my own direction. My family’s ideology and my own, no longer matched up; I didn’t understand why they were so against me doing something that would be beneficial to my future.
