Prior to starting my program in educational counseling, I strongly believed that I wanted to work in a four year setting. However, when I took ‘Group Counseling’ and met Dr. Mosqueda, she slowly convinced me to seek out the community colleges. As the class progressed, she mentioned the opportunity of doing hours at El Camino College, in particular the First Year Experience (FYE) program, so I decided to take the offer. This preface is important because it gives a glimpse into my constant eagerness to learn more about what exactly counselors do at the community college. Internship Site…

Competency 2 also states that social workers should present themselves as learners. I presented myself as the facilitator for the day, students called me teacher and I told them I was not a teacher or expert in citizenship classes but still they called me teacher. Another point Competency 2 refers to is self-regulation to manage the influence of personal biases and values when working. To be honest I don't think someone could master this point who could put aside their own values? I think in one way or the other you will always say and suggest something base on your own beliefs or values.…
For the past seven weeks, I practiced evidence-based practice when I provided care to my patients, thus it helped me to deliver care that was supported by best practice. During my clinical weeks, I was able to provide safe, compassionate and competent care for my patients. Moreover, I maintained privacy and confidently of my patients all the time. For instance, while I was providing care to my patient, one of an immediate family member asked me a general question about patient’s medical condition, and I briefly explained to the patient family member that I am not allowed to share patient’s medication condition; however, I told the family member to ask the nurse, so she can help him.…
Hi Sally, my hospital also enforces mandatory bedside report by all nurses during shift change. I actually enjoy performing bedside report because of several reasons. First of all, I am a visual person so being able to see the patient as they describe how their shift went for me, really helps me understand what had happened and what to anticipate on my shift. Second, if the patient is awake, alert, and oriented, they can be involved during the report by adding on anything they felt the nurse missed or answer any questions I ask them during the report. Third, I have a good view of the room, equipment, continuous bedside monitor, medication drips, and other necessary equipment that they need.…

The grow your skills and to gain a better understanding of yourself as a teacher, reflection is essential. Reflection allows teachers, to look back at lessons, weeks, terms or even years and view what went right and what went wrong thus allowing teachers to start to think critically about what is best for them moving forward. Reflection is crucial to the success of a student teacher, as without it they will struggle to grow, recognise their mistakes and adjust their methods in the future. When reflecting on my own placement and in particular on the above lesson, I have learnt a lot about myself and what I need to do to become a quality teacher.…
