Research Question and Methodology In the beginning of this research paper the main question was, which methods and programs are efficient at reducing recidivism and which are not? This question relates to the Alexandria Probation and Parole internship because their main goal is to successfully transition the men and women back into the community in order to boost society’s safety and reduce any further victimization through the reduction of recidivism. Probation and parole aspirations are to be able to reform the individual into a law abiding citizen through supervision and programming. Probation is not an individual’s right but an opportunity for offenders to continue to living freely within the community rather than being incarcerated.

I explained to them through the email that in order to complete my research paper I would need them to answer the questions and to sign the consent form. I informed them that the consent form was just a formality and a requirement for my paper. I also let them know that the questions were opinion based and there wasn’t a right or wrong answer. I was able to collect the forms and questionnaires from six probation officers that consist of two females and 4 males. I chose these six specific probation officers because I wanted a wide range of experience and a wide range of different caseloads. These caseloads include re-entry, domestic violence, mental health, substance abuse, intensive supervision and the gang unit. The experiences of the probation officers vary 5 years to 20 years. They all agreed that reducing recidivism increases the safety of our communities and that it would help reduce the financial costs that the public would be burdened with. Probation Officer E.R. believes that the reduction of recidivism is important to the community because it lowers the crime rate, reduces drug use and gun violence in the low economy areas, fewer parents would be incarcerated, and to have more individuals work on a livable income. To concur with Probation Officer E.R., Probation Officer H.M. thinks that incarceration leads to the loss of a family structure due to repeat
